Voltage off alt?

High voltage off alt?

Just bypassed ammeter on 69 bee,new harness,2 field alt,updated regulator.installed a voltmeter for the 1st time and the system is overcharging.starts out fine and immediately voltage comes up over 16.confirmed with dig meter at battery.i get almost 18 volts from alt stud at idle.is alternator bad?i know new doesn't mean good....thanks for any opinions.

No, your alternator is just fine. It's charging like crazy. Your problem is with your voltage regulator. Maybe you don't have a good ground reference?
 
The grounds were the 1 st thing i checked.got a pigtail from reg,orange box,block to firewall.i guess I start by replacing the Chinese regulator.maybe after 2 or 3 I'll get a good one

I don't know what all you have done to update the charging system, but you referenced a two field alternator. You also mentioned an "updated regulator". From that, I would think you understand the differences between this system and the original system that was on the '69's. If not, we could talk some more.

As for grounds, use your DVM to measure resistance between the regulator case and the battery negative. Of course it needs to be as near zero as possible.
 
Sorry,the new harness has the 70 and up regulator with 4 prong ballast.i used the mad electric bypass.used a 65 amp square back dual field alternator.only drove it once before I put the volt meter on and found the overcharge.thanks again for the replies,David.
