Does anyone know where the warm lever cable connects? I recently repaired the vacuum ports with rivets & epoxy. When I removed the assembly, I discovered the cable was not connected to anything. The cable hold bracket was missing from the assembly so I made up something and attached the cable to the lever, but I cannot find where the other end should go. I thought it would be for a cold air damper to mix with hot air, but that seems to be a vacuum operated damper near the right door jam when the COLD button is pressed. Both old manuals I have do not show any pictures or diagrams of the heating controls.
At least the vacuum dampers all work good now without any vacuum leaks!
 
Do the early 60's mopars have heater control valves? I'm starting to think the cable was supposed to operate a hot water supply valve somewhere on the heater box. There's an opening on the lower left side that something was once mounted to. If anyone could take a look and post a couple of pics of the lower left side of the heater box, I might be able to solve this mystery!

Correct. It connects to the water control valve that is plumbed into you heater core. I assume we are talking about the '64 Dodge in your avatar? A little confused. If you don't have the valve, do you have a heater core? To what, do your engine heater hoses connect? Picts would be good..
 
Sorry, I'm referring to my 64. I'm certain now that the cable is for the valve.
It has a heater core but I cannot find a valve. I've been looking a valves for other years but I haven't seen anything that looks like that under there yet. Could another core have been installed without a valve or maybe it's just not easy to see with the heater assembly box installed? Maybe I looked at it and didn't know what I was looking at!
I'll take another look tonight when I'm in the shop pulling the poly out.
 
The valve is located behind a little access plate on the drivers side of the heater box. Follow the hoses under the hood to the valve. There is a retaining clip that holds the cable to keep the looped end on the valve control. I can get some pictures if you need them when I get home.
 
I think that part has been removed as there's a square opening with empty mounting holes below the vacuum valves. I was expecting the valve to be located on the copper tube like in the pic but mine looks to be capped off.View attachment 281513

I forgot I had these picts. What happens is the valve starts to leak and people think you cant rebuild them. (which is probably what happened to yours so the previous owner took off the valve and capped the tube.) There is a company that has new diaphragms and plunger seals. . I'll have to look it up when I get home today. Since you don't have a valve, one of your choices may be buy the one on EBAY that you have a pict of, if you can afford it. Problem is you don't know what kind of damage was done the the heater core bung that the valve nipple slides into. It's very important that the bung is perfectly round and smooth of the O-Ring will leak. Good luck. Keep us posted.

BTW: the valve was manufactured by an American company (don't remember the name at this moment) and they stamped the name on the housing. (they were one of the main valve makers for most, if not all, the Big 3 back in the day.) If you end up pulling one out of a junk yard or at a swap meet; google the and "rebuild kit". it will pop up.

I posted in a thread in this forum (62-65 mopars) on page 2 titled "heater control valve fix" that shows how to rebuild one. Ranco is the manufacturer of the valve and NAPA Balknap makes the new seal.

I have a new valve, same style, in my parts stash. If you cannot find one let me know as I may be able to part with it.....if I can find it in my clutter lol.

I am rebuilding the heater control valve on my 67 charger. I am trying to figure out how to get the very small washer to stay in place above the black plunger. I filed the ridges down very carefully to release the washer so I could replace the cracked plunger but am at a loss as to how to punch ridges back in the valve stem to hold the washer in place.

Suggestions?

DMT carries a heater valve repair kit for some models. Just found out that their kit fits my charger too.

Hmmm. You could displace metal on the washer by punching 4 indents around the center and press it on the plunger. Or possibly get a washer same o.d. as you have but a touch smaller on the i.d. so it is a press fit. Just spitballing as I didn't replace mine during the rebuild.
 
If threewood can't help you out, try Northwestern Auto Parts in Grand Rapids Mi. They carry an incredible supply of '50s and 60s parts.
