Can anyone tell me if the wire going to the water temp sending unit is supposed to be hot? I checked it with a test light and it shows hot with and without the key on.

Thank you very much.

Steve

it should be blinking when you touch a test light to it....but only with key on....if it's hot all the time, you have a short somewhere

The sending unit is sending a resistance to ground to the gauge and should not be hot. The gauge picks up the positive(hot) at the cluster. It will blink when measured there because of the voltage limiter. In the old days, the limiter pulsed to lower voltage from 12v to 5v for the gauges. So to answer your question, no, the wire going directly to the sending unit should not be hot.
