Can anyone out there tell me the best product to use to bring old paint to a nice shine. I tried once a year Nu Finish I did not like what I seen, a haze was left even after rubbing, my paint is really old, but the yellow cloth I used had some blue paint on it when I was done rubbing it in, is that normal or am I using the wrong stuff. Any help would be a help, Thanks

I've always used Meguiar's and have been happy with it. Mind you, I've always bought the pro grade stuff from my local auto body supply.

I have always been a fan of 3M products. There is not truely a one step product to do what your asking. The closest answer I can give is 3M's Super Duty Rubbing Compound. Wash your car twice, and use clean sponges each time. Apply with a slow speed dual action polisher. The Super Duty Rubbing Compound does break down and creates a nice finish but should be the first of three steps. The second step should be a good quality wax, after that I recommend 3M's Finesse-it II. The last step creates the high gloss "Wet" look we all are wlooking for. The trick is to completely remove all compounds and waxes between steps as well as using new bonnets and towels. Do not cross contaminate. With this process, your car will look as good as it possibly can. FYI, this will take the better part of a day but should last for quite a while without having to go to this length for many years. Hope you find this useful.

I like Meguires too. If the clear coat is all funked up (assuming you have clear but maybe not) from leaves or bird **** I use an orbital and w/#1 medium cut cleaner. This is essentially liquid clay bar. (don't use by hand it cuts pretty good.) After taking that off (by a rotary buffer) use #9 swirl remover either by hand or orbital and remove with rotary and after removing that #7 showcar glaze on by orbital off with rotary. That how I usually do it and have had great results.

If the #1 doesn't clean up all the clear imperfections then wet sand with 2000 or higher sand paper before proceeding on to swirl remover and glaze. Wet sanding isn't difficult but if you have never done it watch a few youtubes on how to do it and be careful on corners. Also, the rotary's require a certain feel to use them right. Again, youtube that if you are not comfotable with one.

One last thing...I usually wash mine with dawn dishwashing detergent to remove any old wax before starting the aforementioned operation.

Meguires is good. I use Adams and Griot products now. Meguiers sold to 3M. The R/T was painted in 1989. The three step with Adams and the Porter-Cable Orrbital will get rid of the haze. Start with clay if needed, the do a 2 or 3 step. After that just maintain it.

I always used Nu-Finish wax for my cars and one day last summer i bought a bottle of clear liquid wax, Mothers gold.. I just waxed my car but wanted to see if it would make a difference so i tried it and i couldn't believe it.. I put some on my truck that i know hasn't seen any wax, at least for a long time, and it made it look almost like new paint so im kind of hooked on it.. I don't know if it will last as long but i love the results.

One of the best all around compounds I have found is 3M Finesse It II. It's primarily a finishing compound-very light as abrasives go, super for swirl remover etc. The neat thing is, it does magic things for plastic also-one of the best lens/headlight/lexan cleaners I've ever found. I restore old motorcycles, and like our stuff, a lot of plastics etc. are unavailable, this stuff restores many things that looked trashed at first. Also a Meguires fan, but nothing works better than this stuff that I've found.

I use Adams products too, with the Porter-Cable buffer. It's nearly impossible (you have to be trying) to damage the paint with this system.

There is a great product from Surf City Garage called Beyond Clay that works wonders. I sent you a PM with the Ontario Rep contact info..
