So I have a 3/38 tach coming for xmass,but after looking a the steering coloum, my 4 way switch is in the way and signal arm to clamp.so wear did you install your tach,on your 71 road runner or satellite.

That's the same question I have right now ('72 SSP). The factory tach is large and pretty easy to read, but for those without the factory installation, what is one to do (and still keep things looking clean and organized)?

Personally, I have been considering a hood mounted tach for a long time, but can't quite get the courage to perforate the hood with any mounting holes. What I really would like is something that projects an image right in front of me above the dash (lower windshield area). Aren't there some new model vehicles that are already doing this? I think it would be kind of a hologram.

I don't mean messing up the dash at all. The dash needs to remain clean and free of clutter. If there are vehicles out there already that project "data" like I am talking about, we need to find out how they do it. I know for sure military aircraft do it (unless it is incorporated into the helmet somehow?).

Mounted mine to the map light insert. It is in front of the clock which I don't care.

Do you have a clock, or clock delete? If no clock, and you mind disassembly/assembly it may be possible to fabricate something.

Different vehicle, but I mounted a modern SUN Tach in the place where the ash-tray would normally be. Not perfect location, but I can easily put it back without any visible marks.

It's all about the planning of where to put items.

Not sure how that map light panel attaches, but this may be of interest.
I was able to slip the flange of this SW mount over the cluster plastic on the underside of the dash on my '69 Barracuda.

Mine's under the dash, not visible to the import in the lane beside me...No problem glancing at it when necessary. Still able to see the shift points with peripheral vision during high-speed blasts. It sits under the area of the ignition switch (1968) looking up at me..similar to the console mounted tachs but closer to the field of vision.

Heads up displays have been around for quite a while now. In the military that is. Still I think it's a bit to much for an individual to adapt to a car. However WW2 era aircraft had gunsights that projected a n image onto a piece of glass in front of the pilot. Reflective gunsight. Also theres that piece right in front of you in your mopar. That there rear view mirror. Day and night mode. Some clever person might use that optical engineering to do what you seek.

Hood mounted tach can be done with a good double sided tape. I mean a tach like first gen firebirds had. No need for drills.
