A repaired casting flaw maybe? A mishandling gouge? Or Lol, or someone threw it onto the scrap pile in disgust gouge (one fine day I watched a guy do exactly that with an Edelbrock six pack he just pulled off his car...………... with carbs still attached).
I picked this up on "goldbay" a few years back for very fair price as I recall. In fact I may have made the only bid on it. Unreal what they want for 'em these days.
I've seen some with and some where it was obviously removed.
