What 440 block is best?

This is a very interesting discussion, keep in mind we are talking about blocks that are now on average 44 plus years old. What do you think it must be like to deal with many years of Hot cold cycles? I would consider a World casting Block considering the amount of money a stroker will cost to build.

There's a reason they're made of iron, besides cost. Stress cycles and hear cycles have zero negative effect, so long as they are kept below the block's limit. Iron does not have a fatigue limit, unlike aluminum.

That's not exactly true. All metals fatigue but some more than others and it also depends on what kind of service and environment it's been in.

Kid, what are your plans for this engine?

ok since this is about 440 blocks , YES make tons of power without very much done to them .
racers and non racers alike have been useing the 440 for years of reliable use . yes they kick *** and you will go fast just use a block from 1968 up and you will not have a problem . its the very high reving high compression engines that blow up but thats a different subject all in its self . THE 1965-67 didnt have the reinforced water jackets
for high compression /hp engines so they cracked under high load . for what you are looking for its a great idea to build one even if its 45 years old , just have it checked out by a good shop and make your plans according to what you want . there are many still on the road /race tracks (alot more than the b engine stroker 451 animal) that are old and new . always remember its a MOPAR the engines designed back in the early 1962 designed for horse power
and EVERY RULE book change was to slow mopar down so the others could catch up.
383/400.440 no differance i know this for a fact . i know people that race them back in the day (raced ) used the old cast heads where goin pretty fast .
so it all boils down to what you want to do with it.

A little strip and a little street. I have found a 400 block for $350 that I may buy. But I want to do more research before I get anything.
Can you guys tell me what parts do the 400 and 440 have in common that will interchange?
And, someone said 512 c.i. is as big as you can go with a 400 stroker, is that true?

I understand you are wanting to learn. Have you ever driven a 44o engine powered Mopar? At 375 or 400 horsepower, it will give you plenty of thrill and not cost much. I wonder how much the 600-700 horsepower actually make use of that power? Costs a lot to go crazy fast!...........................MO

This is very good advice. We've built the wedge strokers, 451ci-500ci, to 780-920 HP. 500 HP on the street can be very dangerous and isn't hard to get from a 440.

Yes, I may should have mentioned, I had a 450+hp RR, 40 years ago that I strip-only raced for about 4 years, a couple of slightly lower hp RRs before that., And an 800hp drag-boat if that counts for anything,. lol. ,but it was a 454 Chevy. At 60 years old, I have no urge to go fast on the street, lost to many friends that way. 500+HP will be for local strip racing, but not a lot. Also want to slowly cruise it occasionally on the street to club events, etc.. Around 500hp would plz me, with maybe a little nitrous every now and then.. But 400hp or less would not do it for me,. been there done that. I did know a little more about mopar big blocks 40 years ago but haven't touched a mopar in at least 30 years.

I rode in a blown 454 drag boat one time. Very weird feeling --like riding on a high speed surf-board! Horseshoe shaped lake and that mother did not want to turn. shore-line comes up really quick!!!!.....................MO

That's funny, I used to compare mine to a hi-speed surf-board. I used to do a little surfing and that's kinda what it felt like.. lol..
