What are you guys using for steering wheels?

Pat - here are a couple of pics. I don't know how to attach them in a PM. I had started restoring this wheel before I found my other one. The filler I used on this one shrunk too much, so I had planned to take it out and start over with the better stuff I've been using on my sport wheel. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Montclaire - sorry if I'm hijacking your thread, but I thought some others may be interested, too.

Thanks,

Dave

Here is a pic of my leather wrapped wheel without the horn ring attached yet.

14" Momo "Johnny Player Special. Looks great, feels good. Black leather wrap. Dish about 1 inch. Easy to get in and out of car. Has the right feel with Firm Feel Stage One power steering. 69 B Body.

Here is a picture of my steering wheel that I restored.

It was originally green and the top was cracked to the point where it was spinning on the metal core.

I carved out and "v'd" the cracks and used PC 7 epoxy to fill everything.

After multiple applications and sanding this is what I had. It was a PITA!

Here is a closeup of an area that was badly cracked and disfigured where the "wings" meet the wheel.

Sorry for the blurry pic

Here it is installed in the car.

I wish I had before pics as it was teal green and REALLY cracked and nasty.

One more up close pic.

I used an engine stand to rotate it as I painted to avoid any dry spots and keep the paint flowin'!

I chose to stay with my factory wheel. Had my local upholstery shop fill the cracks and wrap the wheel in leather.
Looks great. Have the same feel as the stock wheel.

Thats a great idea. What did that cost if you dont mind my asking?

Hey Dodge330, that may have been a PITA but damn the outcome is awesome. I always figure that besides enjoying the scenery while barreling down the road, it's really important to have a good looking wheel and dash to stare at as well.

64Bel, I'll let you know on the wheel. Looks like yours is also disintegrating in the valley portion on the top left. Must be some faulty plastic in '64.

Thanks for the info as I want to restore my stock wheel also. It looks ok but has a few cracks in it I want to repair. Ron

I re-created a lot of the little finger bumps on the back of the wheel as well.

I worked on it quite a bit one summer but put it away and got back at it in spring.

It has SO MUCH surface area that it takes forever to sand and make look nice.

I sourced the PC-7 Epoxy through True Value and it was a lot cheaper than the Eastwood steering wheel repair kit and that's what they use.

Yes, PC-7 is what Im using, too. I got PC-7 at Ace Hardware for a good price (Ace is closer than True Value to me). Works very well. It's especially easy to use if you wet your finger to mold it into the contours of your repairs - like caulk. My daughter and I have been working on ours together. Having 4 hands made it easier when we were applying the filler. I'll post up some pics of that wheel later. It's in primer but needs just a tad bit more filler work on a few tiny cracks the primer revealed. The wheel in my previous pics is not PC-7. That's why I plan to remove that other stuff and start over.

Dodge 330 - Your wheel turned out fantastic!

I am like the other 383man, the other 63 owner--I prefer the original steering wheel, at least the round ones. My 63's wheel had a number of splits and yellowing on the white pearl upper portion, but the lower red portion is in great shape. These wheels can be restored, including the plastic portions that break or shrink due to the sun or heat over the years. I am having mine redone now by "steering wheel Bob", and hope to get it back soon. I am using a 63 turquoise and white wheel I picked up temporarily untill mine comes back.

Here are some pics of our '64 Plymouth sport wheels. The first two pics are of the original wheel - which is on the car now. It's really too far gone to restore. The 3rd pic is the wheel we bought off a parts car - it was in much better shape than the original. The last pic shows that wheel as it is now - in primer. It'll be painted turquoise when we're finished. The most challenging part was getting the 4 grooves right for the chrome rings. They aren't perfect, but I think they came out ok so far.

I kept the stock wheel but had it redone by Pearl Craft and get positive comment after positive comment at shows. They also thickened the wheel up a bit to fit my hands better.

That red 63 interior is gorgeous--my car is identical, except I have facotory air, and everything is as clean as yours except the steering wheel and the guage bezel, both of which I am having redone. I hope mine turns out half as nice as yours

I've used vise grips before but never did that on a Mopar :D

There must be something inviting about the spline count on the steering shaft and the serrations on the vice grip jaws. I have seen this before and it was on a MoPar! I have done it to move a car around the yard but an old buddy did it to move his car around town for about three days.

Steering wheels are over rated so I resorted to ropes and pulleys. OK, that was a smart *** answer.

My 66 Bel has the original worn wood grain wheel and I'm using a 15" Grant stainless wheel on my 67 Ranchero.

That looks real nice. Ron

My car has a Grant in it.. If I can find a stock wheel that will work it will come out and the stock one installed... You want to trade? Mine is in my 65.

Can't beat an original 2-color Mopar wheel, always gets comments at car shows.

I put a stock Mopar wood wheel on my X, the old blue 3 spoke with the horn ring isn't the best looking wheel IMO! Best looking wheel mother Mopar produced! Besides the e-body rimblow...
