I have a '71 GTX

E86 - I know thats a 440-4

But its a "U code" whatever that means? Does it just mean E86?

and it has the N31 option (optional compression ratio)

So is it just a standard 370hp 440 or something else?

I'm guessing the "U" that you're talking about is the one in the 5th digit of the VIN which simply means it's the 440, which you already know.

My question is, where do you find an N31 code. I don't see that code in the book.

btw, stop by the Welcome Wagon and introduce yourself

The chances are good you are misreading M31 for N31.

M31 is coded on the tag, N31 would not be.

ah ok, well thats not very exciting lol

I'll double check.

So I got the car home and it was an "M". The surprise is that I'm pretty sure the block is numbers matching. The build date, casting number, tag buy the distributor all fit perfectly. The only problem is reading the partial VIN by the oil pan rail. Its not stamped very well and I can only make out 3 and half numbers. Those 3.5 match but I'd like to some how get the orange paint off and see if the stamps come out. Paint thinner didn't budge it. Someone suggested to use a brass dremel wheel.

anything you can get up there to scrape on it with. The paint might chip off

Try soda blasting it or paint stripper.
