what exactly is "RARE".... ???

after reading numerous Craigslist ads.....and ads on this very forum..i have been seeing this word.."rare" being used quite a bit to describe cars. the following is a list of actual things that are deserving of the word "RARE " :

1. the Hope diamond is rare
2. a 3 headed alligator is rare
3. space debris falling from the sky and going through your windshield is rare
4. an honest woman is rare
5. an honest politician is also rare
6. a steak can be rare (wheres my damn Delmonicos Mar Par ? )
7.lightening striking the same place 2wice is rare
8.Tpodwdog going 3 consectutive weeks without getting a PM from a displeased Moderator would be considered rare
9.a woman that hates shopping is rare
10. a space alien sitting down to dinner with you would be rare.....
11. a Beatles reunion tour would be VERY rare !

I generally accept any vehicle that's one of 10 or less as rare, with one of ten being defined by power train only. The fact that a car is one of nine (out of 2,500) with a deluxe cigarette lighter doesn't mean much to me. Same deal with paint.

The "rare" thing is a joke now, especially when you see an ad for a rusted-out hulk with no paint, engine, or trans and it says "this color/motor/transmission combo is SUPER RARE!" What, the one that exists only in the code of the fender tag... which is also gone because the fender's missing?

For a car, I consider 1 of 500 rare, as in a Charger 500 or Superbird.

When compared with production numbers in the dozens of thousands, I consider my 66 somewhat rare (1600 vs 30,000 with a 318, or 3500 383 500 models).

I consider 1 of 250 vary rare and one of less than 100 extremely rare.

You do have to consider perspective as well.
It's the ONLY 383 column automatic with floor mats AND pedal dress up.

They use rare to try and justify their ludicrous price for a pile of junk. There are some cars that are fairly rare. Take my 66 Falcon. It is rare to see a Falcon from this year. The issue is, my Falcon is probably only worth about $2k-3k. Rare does not equal expensive or justify a higher than normal price.

I'm very rare...there is only one of me! Unless someone took my DNA and cloned me. But, I don't think anybody would go to the trouble to do that. So far very few people have shown any interest in the first me, let alone want an exact copy.

I get a kick out of searching for something on ebay and having 300 of the same thing pop up and half of the descriptions say it is rare. Usually they think rare is an excuse to charge more.
