What is this, and could it be spraying ATF?

1964 plymouth fury wagon. Original Poly 318/727 combo. What is this part? It looks like it has a cable connecting into it that is attached to the 'park' slide lever/hammer. It is at the back end of the transmission. Why would it be leaking and could it be spraying out ATF (pressurized leak)??? Someone also smeared it real good with silicone around the mating surface as well.

Thats the housing for the park sprag leaver. The cable takes it in and out of park. There is an O-ring on the cable end that is inside of the housing.

The nut is loosened on the cross pin to release the cable housing. Then the allen plug is removed and a spring clip has to be held to the side to release the cable end.

Do you have a factory service manual? There is an adjustment to be made when re-installing. I have pics and procedures if you don't.

There's no pressure there that would result in spraying fluid just dripping.

Agree with the kid. To remove it, that hex plug has to come out as there is a spring detent that needs to be pressed before the cable pulls out. Besides the o ring, they will leak out the around the cable ferrule. I cleaned mine and sealed with shrink wrap.

Take the housing off with the 6 bolts. Stone it flat. It'll be warped. Install a new O-ring on the cable. Heat shrink (the type with glue in it) around the metal crimp on the cable. Clean the case real good and add RTV to the band anchor pin recess. That'll take care of any leaks in that area. There could be more leaks from either side further forward and running back as well. Won't know until you get it way cleaner than it is.

And check for cracks. I have found a few that the housing had cracks.

Here's the procedure for removing the Park cable. The cable O ring is 7/16" OD by .070" thick.

thanks for the information from everyone. I do have the manual but I was still unclear on some things.
if I'm gonna remove the whole cover to make sure it isn't cracked would I need to drain the transmission first?

You'll lose some fluid when removing the housing but no need to drain the whole transmission. Do not be tempted to remove the housing without first removing the cable. The housing gaskets aren't easy to come by so RTV is an acceptable substitute.

From this link to do the removal and adjustment...

"Tip on PARK lever not holding

1) Go under the car and loosen the adjustment nut on the transmission so the parking cable will move in and out a little.
2)Have a helper move the PARK lever on the dash so that the lever is all the way in the park position. Physically hold the lever in position.
3)Simultaniously, under the car, gently pull on the park cable until it stops moving. Tighten the justment nut."

ok thanks for the info. My park lever holds but it does a weird thing where it brings the neutral button almost all the way in, then the neutral button pops 1/4 inch out for a second and then goes all the way in again.
that's happening during a single full stroke of the park lever.

Time to clean the button mechanism. They get grungy and sticky after 50 + years.

I'm not explaining it well, it doesn't seem like a dirty thing. Here's a video I just took. Is this movement of button normal when using the park lever.

Yes the button should return to neutral when park lever is applied.

Do one of the four procedures listed halfway down this link for your shifter cable adjustment.

It's just moving over the detent. I wouldn't worry about it. And it may go away after you fix the leaks and re-adjust the cable underneath.

It looks like adjustment. The nuetral button shouldn't move out when the park lever is released. When park is seleted from any position the nuetral button will should in by itself and stay there. Make sure the internal core of the park cable isn't bending at the shifter.

im trying to remove the cable now. I loosened the nut and it wont even budge, any ideas? also if im going to remove the whole housing do I need to disconnect the cable first? also is it 6 bolts that hold the housing on or 5? I can only see 5

just found out my cable housing was broken at one of the bolt holes and was just being basically held in place. how hard are these park cable housing covers to find? any ideas where I can get a new one? or should I try to repair this, my only thought would be aluminum brazing?
