I've been having a leak from the rear of the trans and changed a few gaskets but the leak persisted. I believe the leak has been identified and it looks like the prior owner put some orange/copper permatex in an opening on the back of the main case. It's located just above the backside of the pan and just off center, to the right a little. Below are some photos and I can get more if that is needed. Can somebody tell me what may have been done here? What should be in this cavity that was filled with permatex. Any suggestions for a repair?
Thanks in advance.

It appears that the neutral safety switch is missing and the hole is plugged with silicon.

He stated this was on the "back side" of the trans near the center.

I've never seen a neutral safety switch back there. The NSS is always on the driver's side of the case and to the forward part of the case. Also no linkage shown in his photo and the NSS has to be very near the shift selector shaft and linkage.

That hole is for the rear band servo lever pin. There is, or should be, and O-ring on the shaft to prevent leakage. The tab on the extension housing prevents it from falling out. Remove extension housing and pan, then remove pin towards the rear and replace the O-ring, then put it all back together. Don't forget to adjust the rear band again.

Seems like me and you bought our cars from the same guy.

And in my recent reading some of those pins were set up with double o-rings. There's no real pressure there so if it was really really clean&dry the silicone should've worked.

That's what it is alright. It's going to take some disassembly to fix. On the ones I rebuilt, along with the new o ring, I coated the end of the pin with form a gasket before sliding them into place.

I once cut the retainer tab off to avoid pulling the extension housing and made a new tab held on with that nearby housing bolt. Not "kosher" but quick.

It's not really a lot of work. Just takes a little time to do right.

Thanks for the input mopar brothers! Going to get it into a trans shop tomorrow. I've never touched anything inside the case and I need somebody that knows there s**t to take a look at things and see what else is rigged for failure. I'll fill you all in on where this goes.

You can easily seal that leak from the oiutside. Tap the pin forward, clean the area. All good quality RTV. I smooth it fat with a putty knife. I do this on every 727 build I do. Case can get corded and weep.
