What kind of paint job did Chrysler use on the doba?

(1978) Anyone know if the car came with a clearcoat from factory? or if it was a single stage paint job? This info will help me on my mission to polish the original paint back to its prime.

Take a peice of 1500 or 2000 grit and sand a small spot lightly. If it is white looking it is clear coated if it is the color of the car it is a single stage.

I thought the 2 stage paint started in 90 or so? Yup, I'd do what Nsane said but only I would go with 2000 if the finish is just a bit dull. What does the paint look like? Any peel?

i believe in that era ford and chrysler used acrylic enamel and gm used lacquer paint im sure some one will chime in and correct me if i'm wrong but thats the what i've been told anyways.

Nope, no peel.

The car has always been garage kept, except for the last year and a bit it sat outside uncovered at a buddy's farm (I know, I'm an idiot) and the sun beat the crap out of my paint, oxidized so bad in a few spots you could see the paint running off the car from when it rained heh.

here's how the car looks now:

hood, doors and rear qp's took a good beating. what looks like dust is faded paint.

You have enamel on the car. I wouldn't put sandpaper on it, it may be too thin by now. I'd get 3M or Meguiars products. Get a fine polish, you can't get too agressive. Do it by hand, time-consuming, but if you wheel it, you may burn through. Be careful on edges,peaks etc. After you do & hopefully you have a nice gloss & no burn-through, put a good coat of carnauba wax on it. I'm being cautious, but once you go through the color, there's no going back.

yeah the paint is pretty thin in a few places, definatly won't be power polishing.

An orbital buffer would be okay. They don't spin fast enuff to build up a significant amount of heat. Even so, if the horizontal surfaces are sketchy it'd probably be better to do those by hand.

It sure is a nice looking car, looks like enamel paint. I would try some cleaner wax combo on it and see if you could bring the color out on it.. Some of the new stuff they have out works pretty good.

So far my plan for bringing life back to the paint is to start with going over the car with a clay bar, then Meguiar's M80 speed glaze or something similar, followed by Meguiar's M07 show car glaze and finally a couple coats of paste wax.
