I have a D440 engine, 4 bbl. It's completely stock and I was wondering what kind of vehicle it came out of.
I bought it from a guy that had purchased several 440 engines a few years back and could not tell me anything about it. (He did guarantee all the major components)
Anyway, it does not have any VIN or markings on the block above the oil pan. The pad by the distributor says D440
7 26. Curious thing about it, the timing indicator is on the right hand (passenger) of the timing cover. Never seen a MOPAR engine with the timing marks in that location. (yes, I need to get out more). Engine is turquoise in color. Just curious what it might have come out of.

Its a '68 engine, they were all turquoise that year and the vin, if it has one would be stamped up buy the oil pressure sending unit adjacent to the mating surface of the trans. Although in '68 it wouldn't have been the full vin so there's no telling what it came out of. Did it have exhaust manifolds on it?

No HP stamping means it's not from a B body so its from a C body of some sort. (Polara-Fury-Chrysler-Imperial)

It did not have exhaust manifolds.
It does have some metal shields, attached under the heads bolts, protecting no. 6 and no. 8 plug wires.
So the timing marks on the right hand side of the timing chain cover isn't a clue?

It's been established it's from a C body. Unless you can come up with a VIN to tell what plant it was from, there is no way to proceed with exactly what it came out of.

And it really doesn't matter. what you have is a good seasoned 440 engine, it sounds like.

Yep! Close your eyes and pick ANY big block from 68, 69 or 70 and you have the best parts the factory had to offer. For the best heads add the 66-67 440 to the list.
