What slicks are everyone running

drop dead gorgeous '63, wish I'd have kept the one I bought new. ($2904.00 out the door)

Thank you very much for the kind words. Ron

I run M/T 29.5x10.5 bias slick, I have a pair of 30x9 Hoosier radial slicks if I need to pick up a tenth. The radials need a well prepped track to take full advantage of them.

I have had good luck with my radial slicks as they have hooked good at every track I have raced at. I found that as long as I make sure I stage in the grove which it the tracks where the cars have been launching it hooks good. Course its only a 10.70 car but I only use SS springs and longer extending shocks. Ron

I'm running MT Pro Bracket Radials this year, we'll see if they're as good as everybody says.
they are great . I have run them for 3 seasons . On my second set , get around 150 or so passes a set .

I now have 2 races on my new Hoosier Slicks.
They are the Hoosier #18175 29x10.50x15W. 29.3" tall, 93.5" rollout, 11" tread width and 13.2" section width. They are the STIFF SIDEWALL tire. I also run tubes to make the sidewalls even stiffer. Before these tires I had a set of M/T ET STREET slicks. 28x13.50x15, 11.2" tread with, 13.2 section width, 88" rollout. When I launched my car off my transbrake it literally "crushed" those tires. Hoosier Tech recommended these stiff sidewall tires for my 3800lb car. They still "wrinkle" on the launch at 3600rpm off the transbrake but they are not getting crushed like the M/T's. I run 17lbs of air in these Hoosiers. I am going to experiment at the March Meet Test and Tune at the end of thisFebruary with trying to launch at 4000rpm off the transbrake with 18-19lbs of air. My 60' foots now range between 1.40 and 1.43, not great but it still puts me in the 10.17, 10.18 and 10.19 about every run.
I run a 4.30 gear in my Dana 60. With the 88" rollout M/T's I went about 129.5 at 6900 thru the lites. Now with the 93.5" rollout Hoosiers I go 131.5 at 6900 thru the lites. The taller tire did NOT hurt my incremental times at all. The motor still had enuf "grunt" to pull the taller tire.
PS: My rear end is narrowed and body is mini-tubbed to get these tire to fit. I have to let the air out of them to get them in and out.

Below are a couple of screenshot pixs off of the Video of the car launching.

The top picture is RIGHT WHEN I LET MY FINGER OFF THE TRANSBRAKE BUTTON,
the other picture is about 15-20 feet out from the start line.
Also if you look closely at the bottom left of the pixs you will see that the 1st picture is 37 seconds after the video was started and the next picture is 38 seconds into the video. A one second time lapse...pretty cool I thought.
By the way, I did outrun that white altered wheelbase HEMI car on this run. I went 10.22 and he went 10.29. I was at the California Hot Rod Reunion at Famoso (Bakersfield).

Mike - what does the “W” mean in the tire description. I see some racing classes specify no “W” tires, just wondering what it means.

It means the 10.5" tire is actually 11" wide but designated as 10.5 on the tire...also on these Hoosiers they happen to be also STIFF SIDEWALL TIRES. I am not sure if all "W" tires are stiff sidewall, all I know is that these #18175 Hoosiers are stiff sidewall.

Mike who did you order your tires from and were you able to request a certain roll out.

The reason I ask is I always bought tires from Harlow Tire back east where I live. They closed several yrs ago. But when they were open I would tell them what I needed and they would get as close to what I needed as possible.

I need new tires for the wagon. Called Summit and well that went no where. Was told I get what they get or if picked up in store what the picker brings up.

As we know all these tires vary and I want go get a little taller tire under it. Most 28's tend to run short and 29.5's run tall. Being a 67 non tubbed car room is a premium. I know I can run a 29" but anything more is going to cause problems.

After reading about the tires Mike runs it makes me think about how some tire company's mark their tires. I run the Hoosier 30 x 9 x 15 radial tires and they actually list the tire twice in the radial. They have both listed as 30 x 9 x 15 but one set is 92" rollout and the other set at 94" rollout. I use the 94" rollout as I like the taller tire since I drive the street and my car likes the slightly lower rpm it traps with them. I have also seen a tire listed at 29" tire but its only 27.5 inch's tall they say. Then why list it as a 29 inch tire ?

Its funny Mike as I did not know they sold a stiff sidewall bias tire like that as I remember when I used bias slicks many years ago and we would run like 8 to 12 lbs in them. But it make sense as with the transbrake it must hit the tire real hard so it should like the stiff sidewall better as long as it hooks on them. And if you run on a Pro Tree the stiff sidewalls give less movement for better reaction times. I run about 16 to 18 in my radial slicks with no tubes and they have a pretty stiff sidewall. I put them at 16 but after my burnout and making a pass they are up around 18 which is where I leave them since they hook fine like that.

I have also heard guys running stick shift manual trans cars say that they don't hook good on the radials and from what I hear none of the manual trans cars run radial slicks. All I know is I tried the radial 30 x 9 slicks and I love them because they hook good on my car and they handle better then the bias did since I have a radial tire up front. Ron

This is the only launch pic I have on the radials but you can see the sidewalls don't wrinkle much at all like the older bias slicks did. Your car looks awesome on them slicks you are using Mike ! Ron

Call McCormack Racing out of Michigan, they will check roll out for you.

best slicks I ever had -no longer available were the firestone 14 32x15W 9N compound, those tires would literally hook up on dirt. so much so the dang sprint car racers started grabbing them all and grooving them for their dirt track cars- point moot, long gone tires but that was it in the mid 70's, today's tires I'd try are the Hoosiers ,I have new M&H 1200-13 x 16" on my dragster. I know- not the same..

I've run 30x9 Hoosier radials for years, very consistent. Love 'em.

McCormick tires in Detroit has a little lower price than summit. I got mine from summit. They matched McCormick pricing and sent a matched pair of 93.5 rollout. They came out of Nevada. They had no problem sending a matched pair.

with the 14 32 x 15W firestones I had in the 70s' the W was foe width of tread
Hoosier 28x9. May give M&H a try. Wish I could find 29x9 but all I see is 29.5 and those are really closer to 30".
