I have a Quickfuel 950 carb on my 493 currently. I am looking for nice streetable carb to go with for better fuel mpg's and better response. Not too worried about losing 15-20hp. Any ideas? 800CFM? 825CFM? Single pumper? Not double? Thanks guys..

Does your engine make good vacuum? If you have a high overlap cam then you are pretty much screwed for clean street driving and good MPG.

If you do have good vacuum then pick a nice street calibrated carb - and that does not mean a Holey DP. Smaller the better without totally wiping out the top end, but like you said, loosing a little on the top should be of no consequence since a street motor doesn't spend every running moment at max RPM.

There's nothing "unstreetable" about the carb you have on it. If it's not giving you what you want, it's either a tuning issue or a cam issue.

^ True with this, however I have found the proforms a pain in the *** to tune.

holley makes a vacuum secondary, auto choke 850. i think its a 80531 but double check me on the number.

I used a 950 proform on both My 498 strokers...got decent mileage and was super on the street and strip...they have alot of features for the money. Mechanical secondaries...no "tuning" issues

You could always try to find one of those 1050 Holley 3 barrel vacuum secondary carbuertors. List number 4604.

hey rusty, one of these,...:blob1:.

Yeah, but that's a 3916. It's a 950. The 1050s had dump tubes in the rear with no boosters. I sorta want to try one on my 383. Either one would probably work.

Hey 70charger,sounds like you need to tune.I have a 950 quickfuel on my 496 and runs like I have efi. Mine was rich out of the box, changed the idle air bleeds to #75 from #70 to be able to set the idle mixture and changed the jets to 74/82 from 78/86 ootb. Really improved mpg and the rich fuel odors. My timing is 18* initial,34 total and has run 11.70,s @116mph in the 1/4 and 10-12 mpg.

yep, it's a 950. i did have it on my 383 road runner, way back in the day.

I would try to tune it or have someone with some experience/tune up parts listen to how it runs. I have run 1050's on tiny engines and tuned right they work just fine. If you really want to maximize fuel mileage bolt on a six pack!

We had one of those on the dyno (489 cube BBC) and it actually did pretty darn good. The idle circuit was lean going into the transition but a BIG squirter and high flow screw took care of the stumble. It was right up there with a QuickFuel 850 DP too.

Yep, there you go. I've run that 950 Quick Fuel on anything, 383-500 ci.

truth is, if the qf950 is the same size as the holley 950hp (venturis and throttle bore) its far from being too big for a 493. may be cheaper to just go after the tune-up. those holley 950's are just contoured 750's with larger throttle bores. people i know who have actually flowed them only get about 825-850cfm out of them. they only have about 6sqin of venturi, pretty small.

Setting my sites on one of those QFT - 950 mechanical secondaries and 4 corner idle, that stuff is all new to me, and what is the difference between annular and down-leg? Going on my 493 the old eddy 800 is running good but want a better system over all for the motor. Nothing but street time so far and probably will never see the track.

What are you looking for exactly and what is the rest of the motors specs ?? like are you looking for more mpg at 1800 rpm with a 600 lf cam at w260@50 duration....

What are you looking from it and where ?
