I want to switch out my 8 1/4 limited slip small gear under I shift at 5600RPMs which is about 55-60mph.

The plan is to put in a Sure Grip Carrier with a little bigger Gear I want a 3.55 but Ill go with a 3.23.

Should I be able to just throw the suregrip carrier in and swap out the limited slip? Is there anything I need to look for...? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jake

Suregrip and limited slip are used for the same term. What gear ratio do you have now and what do you want to install? Do both the rear tires turn in the same direction when rear is off the ground? Or does one turn clockwise and the other counter-clockwise?

Jeep used 8.25" rears under Cherokees and some came with 3.55 gears and a SureGrip. Since they were in Jeeps there's a few aftermarket lockers and R&Ps available too, you just gotta look in the right place, ie: off-roader/4x4 suppliers.

There's no "carrier" on an 8 1/4.

You'll have to set up the ring and pinion lash.

Not terrible but can be tough the first time, and no room for error.

Clockwise and counter clock wise I want both tires to turn with a 3.23 or 355 gear.

I don't wanna switch out the axle and if I ever did id do a 8 3/4 but they are expensive and an assload to ship.

These are the two I was looking at http://m.ebay.com/itm/331163257879?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVE

Go to YUKON
Get all the info you need....

Yukon had everything for my AMC Gremlin...

The Ebay parts that you listed came from the Jeeps that Jonnyuma was referring to that are fairly common late model used parts. Still will have to have someone setup that knows what they are doing.

$1000

I've got a 3.55 R&P for my 8.25" that's been in the box for almost 2 years. I haven't gotten up the nerve to install it myself, but one shop told me around $300 to do the install.

What do you mean? Your post isn't clear.
Anyhow....
The 8 1/4" axle used the following ratios: 3.21 and 3.55. There are others but these are closest to what you wrote. You could look for USED SG diffs in Dakota 4x4s. I've found a few with them here in CA. Anytime you change the differential, you disturb the ring and pinion settings. You will need to reestablish the proper gear contact pattern afterwards.
The 8 1/4" axle changed in 1997. If you're going to look for used diffs, you need a 1996 and earlier.

Yeah, I spoke to a shop and they said the same thing. However before I order it, I need to know the spline. I heard the 8.25's usually have a 27 spline, but I'm not sure and I dont have time to pull the axles and count.

as stated before, 1997 was the spline count change- to 29 IIRC.

For the cost of your gears, and the setup, plus related misc, you can probably find an E body or 68-70 wagon 8 3/4 ($100-$150) and a used 3.23 SG chunk ($250-$350).

Yeah I've been looking at an 8 3/4 upgrade. No junk yards in hilton head and barely any parts in that matter. All the 8 3/4 cost as ***-ton in shipping. Whereas I have a true lock carrier for a 8 1/4 that a gentleman sent me on FBBO. I want to slap on a 3.91 but I just want to know if it's do-able?

Certainly doable, but I bet you get real close to $1000 by the time you're done.

Did you try craigslist/search tempest for listings within driving distance?

Seems like folks can't give E body 8 3/4 axles away (IIRC ALL E body cars came with them).

I bought one cheap (and complete drum to drum with center) almost 2 years ago thinking it would be an easy sell.

Ended up trading it to a member for a pair of 15" rallye wheels and was happy to do it.

Are there any swap meet near you? I see them frequently at ours. I took mine to three different ones a total of five times.

IIRC there are a couple swap meets in GA (N Atlanta, and Moultrie). Think one is twice a year.

How far are you from Shelby NC? There's an all Mopar junk yard there.

One thing you will have staying with your 8 1/4, is all new parts. that's nice to have.

I've been to a few theres a junk yard in yamaneesse? -how ever you spell it. And it was heaven for my brother (bunch of wrecked ricers) and no mopars...

As for swaps, here in hilton head there are two types of people, the guy that pays the shop to do everything (99%) and the do it yourself'rs with little money (1%). I'm buddies with most of that 1% and they're all chevy and mustang guys.:eusa_snooty:

All new parts is why I would like to keep the 8 1/4, people say it can't handle the HP/TQ but my 360 won't be tearing up the track anytime soon. Also, if I went with the 8 3/4 I may have to move the leaf springs. Which is fine by me, means I can through some fatties on the back , I just don't have the time or resources to do it

I think you're confused about what a carrier is. It's what the ring gear bolts to be it a Sure Grip (limited slip) or an open unit. The 'chunk', like what most refer to in an 8 3/4 is a 3rd member and that is called the case and is what the carrier (with ring gear) bolts into but a lot of people call the chunk a carrier and that can get confusing. Setting the pinion depth is the hardest part and then setting backlash after the pinion depth is set is next. Setting backlash is fairly easy if you have adjusters (like an 8 3/4 has) but if you have to use shims, that can get as tedious as setting the pinion depth. I have setup bearings that slip on and off to make the job easier and once I'm happy with the pinion setting, I press on the permanent bearing then do the same for the backlash. On the 8 3/4, you press new bearings on the carrier right off the bat since it has adjusters for back lash and don't have to worry about using shims. The adjusters also preload the carrier bearings...

BTW, Trac Lok limited slip units suck. IMO, you'd be miles ahead to go for an 8 3/4 or try and find a clutch type Sure Grip unit for the 8 1/4.

You're right I've been using "chunk", "pig", and "carrier" interchangeably for so long.....

I've also heard "chuck", which I don't care for.

I've also never called it a "banjo" style.

Banjo style refers to the design of the housing.....kinda looks like the body of a banjo from the back or a banjo fitting. It took me a bit to learn what the difference was between spider and side gears were lol

you can get a 3.55 and the limited slip carrier from a Dakota. My 93 Dakota had 3.55 gears and a limited slip from the factory. Its now in a pick n pull in Hammond Indiana...so now you know where the parts are haha.

And the 93 Dakota will have the crappy Track Loc diff too. Got one in my 2000 Durango and wish I never saw the dang thing lol....but I do like the 3.92 gears.
