A 66 Coronet with a 318 would have come with a 904 automatic. The only SB's in cars that came with 727's are the 340's in A-Bodies from 68-73 and the 360 in A and B-bodies from 74 to around 80. I think trucks came with 727's when equipped with a 360 from 72-80.

The 904 can come from any Mopar with a 318 from 66-80 and the 727 can come from A-Bodies from 68-74, b-bodies 71-80.

Is the 904 a good tranny or do you recomend any upgrade... The engine is gonna be mildly modified with bolt ons, but no crazy numbers. Will this tranny withstand?

Not totally correct. My 64 polara 500 came with the poly 318 and a 727 with an 8 3/4 suregrip.

My 65 has a 727 also,from the factory,318 poly

If you guys noticed I put 66-80 as the years for the 904. That fact however is not written in stone when it comes to Mopar but I know how you guys like to rub peoples mistakes in their faces. Sorry I am not perfect.

As far as a 904 handling a mildly built 318, you should have no problem with it holding up.

I'm not replying to this ad to disrespect anyone here........ but we have a 67 Coronet500 with a poly 318/727 and just picked up a 67 Coronet 4 door 318/727.
As PettyBlue stated....... a 904 tran's will do the same as a 727 just somewhat
lighter in weight, and you can buy lot's of aftermarket part's for. Good luck on your tran's.

Pay no mind Joe, I appreciate your knowledge... Im sure its all fun and games. I got a kick out of it. I'll be taking a look at my pan today and Ill post what the car has, once and for all.:read:

I would like to apoligize. When I made the first post, I mistakenly thought the 66 318 was an LA series engine. My post was referring to the 318 LA series engines from 67-80 which used the 904 auto behind them. I have never personally seen a 318 LA motor with a 727 behind it with the exception of maybe heavy duty and truck applications. 67 was the first year for the 318 LA series engine so if a 67 coronet has a 318 poly in it it is not original.

all 66 8 cylinder cars had the 727 the 904 was not used until 67 or 68. Keep your 66 transmission its the best one it is the first year that had the linkage shifting and the last year that had the rear pump.

It does have the shift linkage on the steering column, does that rear pump has anything to do with the transmission not reversing at all? all of a sudden. I did have the car parked uphill and the e-brake was not working at all?
