What transmission????

I'm going to build a early 440 motor and I want to go with a over drive 883 4 spd trans. Can I use a 4spd with over drive from a 1980 and up or what yrs should I look for???? Looking at a build of around 600hp with 4spd over drive and 83/4 with 391 or more suregrip. This is going in a 1969 Dodge Coronet any information you have will help thank you..

the later factory overdrive (truck/van )will work as long as you don't drive it. 600 horse is alot for those .I have them in two of my cars with small blocks and they break easy without alot of effort..................That is just my experience,I'm sure someone has had one in there car for years and never broke it. I BEAT ON MINE !! I go to the track, and I drive them everywhere,not just around the block a few trimes a year.Why else would you have a stick in your car :angel1:

One thing to watch about the aluminum cases is the counter cluster shaft. IF YOU DON"T HAVE IT BUSHED it will beat itself out of the case......if driven hard

You need a keisler 5 speed..That will hold up to the h.p. you are talking about...

Another vote for not using that trans for anything more than a very mild engine. Think about what they were put in when they came out! Aluminum case and not built to take the punishment of a big block. The early all cast iron boxes were. Besides, a normal 4 speed is running straight through the main/tail shaft once it's in 4th gear so it's locked up and no longer relies on the gears. The first 3 gears produce a lot of thrust/side loading but an OD trans 4th gear is NOT running straight through and will be producing thrust/side loading all the time it's in OD and the loading is higher yet because it has to over come the forces of the car, the road conditions AND the drag on the car at speed and the torque of a big block will rip them apart. Now if you just shift it into 3rd (which is high gear for those) and don't try to run it hard in OD it may hold up a bit longer but why would you want to run a 3 speed stick with OD? Spend the bucks and do it right the first time....

What about a 727? Do you think with a rebuilt and shift kit will work better then the 4spd??? What about just a 4spd and can I use a 1975 --1989 4spd or are they all aluminum cased??? What year did they stop making the cast case for the 4spd???

with that much HP you are going to have to do some serious mods to the 727
definitely a billet steel front drum, race clutches kolene steels, bolt in sprag, steel front planet
I'd suggest a manual VB and I would not put any converter other than an ATI or a Turbo action behind that motor

Yeah, you can build the 727 to take that kind of power and the old 833 NON OD trans will take a lot more punishment than the OD unit but 600 will be pushing it. It may hold up ok with street tires but if you put slicks on it and make it dead hook, you may break it. A buddy and I were running a car in Super Street (10.90 index) in the early 80's and we went through a few of them. You're going to spend some money one way or the other either in broken parts or building something to take the power. May as well go after something that's already on the market that is built to take it. Jerico makes a good 4 speed but it's not cheap and they do have units that are not pure drag race only. Nothing will be cheap if you want something that's going to last....
