So... for all the oldies here. Back in the 70's during the van/CB/disco craze... what was your handle ? And why/how did you come up with it ? Me ? Since I was long Mopar in my blood by that time, the name had to relate. Mine was Superbird. "Breaker 1-9, you got the Superbird here. What's your 20 ? I'm over here on the FBBO site, and I'd like to know if you got any story about anything to do with your CB experience back in the day. Let us know about any conversations you had, any entertaining experiences you've had from your CB interactions... good or bad. And, watch out for those smokies, he's got his camera on ! That's a 10-4, good buddy ! "

We are on a farm and long time before cell phones came around we had a CB base station in the house and the tractor had one mounted in it
Dad called himself Cornbinder was his handle
He never talked much on it but would spend evenings listening in at the house

I take it, you're a youngster. Well, us oldsters blabbered about on the road. And listened , as well. I listened to the truckers telling us where the "smokies" were.

I was the scarecrow. Driving from PA to TX in 1978, we put a CB in our rental car and hit the road. My brother and I routinely drove over 100 MPH (during the 55 MPH max days) on the way. We talked on the CB with the truckers on the way to find the smokeys. On the way home, we ran into two other “scarecrows”. I guess that they liked my handle and adopted it for themselves.

Well, as we drove through MD on the way home, I turned on the CB as my brother drove and as soon as it warmed up, it spurted out “Smokey, Smokey, Smokey!” And my brother stood on the brakes, skidding sideways on 95. There was another car following us as he’d seen our CB antenna and figured we were monitoring for smokeys. We were both driving about 110 MPH at the time, so the following car went into a panic stop as we skidded. He gave us the finger as we crested the hill in the road. Then, we saw that the 4 lane highway had three lanes closed past the hillcrest, and smokeys were pointing at each car as they went into the single lane to get bye, motioning them to pull over (for a ticket) or pass. Well, we were motioned to pass and so was the car who gave us the finger. Then, the finger car guy gave us clasped hands of praise when we got through that Smokey stop. :praying:

I’ve since settled down after those days.

KABZ 5579 Jailbird Hollerin' at you from the good side of the wall at Lorton Correctional! :)
(It's a federal prison in Lorton, VA where I lived as a teen).

Our area in those days did all the social stuff associated with CB's - "coffee breaks", you know.
I met and was friends with several in the neighborhood who all shared the hobby - we built custom
consoles for our equipment and I learned how to "hop up" the units for more wattage and such.
My base system antenna was mounted in a (live) pine tree next to my window, about 50' up - one
of those high-dollar Starduster units.
Between it, my hopped-up base station (a Johnson, of course) and my D-104 mic, my signal was LOUD. :)

Nice story. Done that trip on 95 many, many times. Seems the stretch in MD is always full of "smokies with their cameras on".

Even after the CB days, I'd hook one up on my car while traveling out to either Carlisle, or the Nats in both Indy and Columbus in the 90's.

I had a few CBs over the years when I was trucking. Still have my last one stuck away , a old Uniden with a hustler antenna.
I was not very creative when it came to my ( handle ) I just used my 1st name.
Fun times, about killed me , but damn we had fun.

We got together with 2 of our neighbors for a summer vacation in Colorado. It was one of those condo for a week trips won at a church raffle. We all bought walkey-talkey's for the trip. We had a blast. Like everyone was in the same vehicle. I was toolman (of course) My wife was "beancounter" because she's an accountant. Pam was "Stitcher" (seamstress) and her hubby Phil was "Undertaker" because he is one. We had a great time.

had a CB in my bedroom as a kid...... I was "grasshopper"

traded a color TV for a Cobra with sideband and a Turner Super Sidekick power mic, always wanted a D104

used to stick my head in a metal waste basket for an echo effect

Something just popped into my head and made me laugh.....
I had a cassette by Jerry Clower , the episode with (Marcel & the Coon hunting monkey )
That damn thing would make tears roll I was laughing so bad.

my Pop bought me an antenna for Christmas and put it on the roof ......... when you're 12 years old, you take things like that for granted..... Thanks Pop

Years ago we would caravan across the country every year with my sister in law and her family. From Washington DC to Florida, to 4 corners, Colorado, you name it. We had Walkie Talkies, two-way radios. My handle was mopar man and my brother in laws was silver bullet. That's been a lifetime ago. Thanks for reminding me of some good old memories.

I've always had a Jeep CJ5 and in the 70s it was a Renegade Levis model so of course I was Renegade. Still am when I get on a radio. There was a year at hunting camp when I had sold the Jeep to my current best buddy (and later repossessed for non-payment - we just talked about that the other day), and I showed up in a red 1979 VW Scirocco. That year I morphed into Red Rocco until I got back in the CJ. That same year, one of my partners showed up in a green Mazda 808 shitbox and became Mazdarati. On the last day of the season, he shot my buck with his .357 (I can say that now - the statue of permutations has perspired), and we proceeded to argue whose trunk it was going in. He argued for mine since it was a hatchback and it was my tag. I argued for his because he was the shooter and no carpet. I won and most of the deer went in the trunk of the Mazdarati with various parts hanging out. Good times!

My Handle was "Sparky" and I hauled gravel with an R model Mack. RS700L with a 318 Detroit and Fuller RTO9513.
Later graduated to hauling Petroleum products for Refiner's Transport and got one of the first Mack 300+. What a
rocket until it hit 65! Had alot of fun and glad I got the experience.

Duh! Chryslerkid

Then when the internet came out I wanted the same handle but it was already taken. So I used a "K" and the rest is history...Good Buddy. :)
