I've been looking for an 8.75 rear for my 74 Road Runner, and with the exception of one guy, this is how my conversations are going...

"Hey, I'm looking for an 8.75 for a 71-74 B body."

"Sorry, don't have one. But I do have some E-body ones!"

You would think with all the E-bodies that were restored before the market collapsed there wouldn't be a spare E-body part to be found, but the things are everywhere!

To get larger tires onto an E-Body, it's pretty common to swap in a B-Body rear and some offset hangers. This leaves you with a bunch of E-Body rears laying around.

Tell me about it.

I have two I can't get rid of.

Guess I'll just put one on my car, then maybe sell my 72 B body unit at a premium price, since there is high demand...or at least low supply.

According to my old Hollander interchange book 48th edition, you need a housing #3507629 (Hollander #1085). The book says these models fit all say removable carrier 8.75 and they are...
Charger '73-74
Dodge Pass Coronet '73 except S.W.
Dodge Pass Coronet '74
Plymouth Satellite '73 except S.W.
Plymouth Satellite '74
Plymouth Road runner '73-'74

I doubt you will find a cheep one of these. When I was looking for a 8.75 for my Demon I was getting quotes that were way out of what I thought to be reasonable. I ended up with an 8.8 out of a ford explorer. I know some folks won't like it but for under 300$ I got 3.73 gears, locker, and disc brakes plus the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern is the same as your stock wheels. A lot of hot rodders used the ford 9 inch in their cars and just dropped the name ford and replaced it with currie or strange or a number of others. Ford replaced the 9 inch with the 8.8 and we have put these in many different types of rides with no problems. The explorers all have 31 spline axles and these rears are easy to shorten or extend at a very small price. When done properly these work great and they do not have 40 years of metal fatigue on them as well.

Butt...R.C. rear ends look much better. lol

I don't know that there's a lot of demand for B body ones either. I've been watching one for sale in Ocala for two years now. The guy wants $400 for it, and it hasn't budged.

I'm probably going to be in your neck of the woods this weekend looking for a rear. I've found a couple north of Tampa that I'm going to look at.

I have a Camaro front spoiler on my car, so I don't mind a Ford rear. :) Which vehicles had the 9" rear?

Bruzilla, ford used the 9 inch in 1957 and used in trucks and cars into the '80's. I think it is actually 8.9 instead of 9.0 so the 8.8 is only one tenth of an inch smaller than the 9". The rear in your police car in most likely 8.8. I like the explorer one as it has 31 spline axles and unlike the 28 spline ones they are fat all the way to the spline. I would also recommend c-clip eliminators. These rears come with a good bunch of ratios to choose from as well. This is not the 7.5 used in the ranger p/u.

Actually early B body rears are swapped in for E bodys to give more tire space. E bodys are swapped in for 71 and later B body rears for the same reason. late B are just wide and no big demand other than someone who wants a to upgrade to a 8.75

The rear in your police car in most likely 8.8.

Hmmm... that's interesting. I wonder how much of a PITA it would be to swap out an entire rear from a Police Interceptor to my Road Runner? Ditch the leaf springs, drums, and weak rear all in one fell swoop! :)

Pretty sure that first pic is an A body rear.

Back to business.

At Don Garlits-
I had zero bites or even offers for my E body 8 3/4 with backing plates and hardware for asking price of $175.
I had the 489 2.76 open chunk at $175 as well, and no takers there either.

That would be $350, but not even an offer.

The ford 8.8 is a really popular swap.
U-pulls are full of them.

As far as the E axle in a 71-74 B...it should be cake.
I wouldn't even relocate the perches, as that would probably double the price, and be a minimal concern.

I'm not surprised. I've found eight E-body 8.75 rears for sale between Tampa and Orlando, that are complete drum to drum, and most can be gotten for $200.

Is that including a chunk?

IIRC all E's had that high demand 489 chunk.

I looked at my price sheet, and the housing, plates and drums was marked $125.

That's with a non-posi chunk. BTW, I don't see the value in the 489 chunks. The older chunks were able to handle the early Hemis, so I think they're fine.

I never broke any 42 or 41 housings and God knows I tried! And I guess everyone threw away the E body housings after pulling them out because I never see any for sale and couldn't find one when I needed it.

I think they all ended up in central Florida.
