I am going to install 12" wide steel police wheels on the back of my 65 Coronet and have a couple of questions.

* I will be installing a custom Dana rearend so I have a lot of options for the proper wheel backspace and offset.

1. Is there an optimum backspace to go for or is it just personal preference?

2. How does wheel offset affect the situation and what should a guy shoot for?

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Al

get a percy's wheel rite tool or just measure up what backspace/offset you will need to fit.

So whatever I prefer that will work for me will be okay - there is no one way that is better or preferable?

If you are going with a custom offset on the 12" steel wheels, you can go with whatever you want. I would suggest centering in the rim (i.e. 6" offset). Some like the deep dish look and go with more offset.

well you can't really have it wherever you want it, if you already have the diff and already have the wheel well then you have to ensure the wheel fits in the centre so get everything installed and measure what will fit and but to suit, Or buy whatever wheel you want and modify car to suit

Thanks for the replies I think I will go with a 6" backspacing to keep things centered and as I have not ordered the Dana yet all I need now is to not screw up my measurements. Thanks, Al

get everything square and ride height of the body set while sitting your new wheels in the wheel wells perfectly centre then measure the distance between wheels, dont forget to allow for brake width etc.

I would suggest minimum back spacing that still allows the brakes to be covered up. I'm running 10" wide steelies with, I dunno off hand, maybe 6.5" back spacing. The issue I have is the axle extends so far into the wheelhouse the tire is a bit&@ to remove. Car is mini tubbed and I'm running 12.5"x30" ET Streets. I feel that if I had less back space, the wheel would come right out.

Maybe 4" or 5" back space?

A buddy of mine has a 63 Ford with that exact problem, he has a heck of a time removing the rear wheels. HT413 thanks for the heads up I will take that in to account when I order my wheels and maybe see how 5" will fit.
