Wheel options, paint or powdercoat?

I have a set of police wheels for my '72 Sat. They need to be redone. They have the dog dish centre caps and trim rings. What would be a better option for refinishing? Paint or powdercoat. The trim rings have these pointy bits that hold them to the wheel, and the centre caps are friction fit.

My concern is that if I powdercoat, it will get chipped. If I paint, it will get scratched/chipped, but I could refinish them myself when needed. Powdercoat, I would have to get it done at a shop.

I would paint them. I had mine sandblasted, then I primed and painted them. I have hubcaps with the pointy things and if the wheels get scratched too bad, it will be easy to touch up. Just my two cents.
 
Thanks for the input. I was leaning towards the paint myself, just because of the ability to retouch myself if/when needed.
 
Any good powdercoating facility will have touch-up colors designed to adhere to powdercoated surfaces. Powdercoating is far more durable, and, in many cases the same price as getting the wheels painted.
 
I painted mine 2 years ago and they still look great
 
Powdercoat all the way. Had the rally's done on my truck in gloss black and it's like looking in a mirror. Plus don't have to polish it just wipe them clean
 
The steelies on my 66 Belvedere are power baked gloss black and they are holding up well. The car sits outside and I just hose it off and wipe the wheels down and good to go. There are some light swirl marks from wiping the wheels but still look good from 5 feet away. The finish is very tough. I've landed the lug wrench on the painted surface and no chip. Maybe a small ding in the coating but that's about it. If you do paint make sure you degrease and etch the bare steel before painting. POR 15 might be an option if you don't want to powder bake.
 
Cudachick1968 is a member here and ownes and operates Phoenix Specialty Coatings in Greenfield Tennesse. She's one hell of a powder coater and gives member discounts. She looks good in hot pants too.
 
I powdercoated the 70 Superbees' Ralleys AND the 63 Polaras' steelies.

Perhaps powdercoating is more Robust, durable ?
 
I painted mine, but I work at a body shop. No center caps or trim rings, just chrome lug nuts.

back in the day on most of my stuff I use to spray all my stuff with Imron ,its very good stuff,painted planes and commerical stuff with it so I started on the rods it was pricy but very good ,today powered coat is top notch and its not over priced yet ,before Imron came out we used enamel then acrylic enamel,then added hardner ,then epoxy's came out and then you all the new stuff today and it always changes and the cost keep going up thats why getting your cars painted cost so much:evil6:
 
I have both options available locally. My big concern is what would be better for wear? Regarding stuff like tire removal/install, putting on lug nuts, crimping on wheel weights. Doing any of these things could chip/scratch the finish. Then what? What would be easier to repair?
 
Mine are pretty durable, they didn't chip when I tightened the lug nuts. I always static balance my wheels anyway. Weights on the inside only.
 
Powder Coating is far more durable "than any paint", but any coating can chip, Powder Coating is just a far more durable form of coating than paint, much more expensive at times too, not as many colors to choose from also, they can get pretty damn close to most color matches thou, if you find a good reputable shop...
