Wheel well tire gap???

Hello, I have a 1966 dodge charger. I recently bought new wheels and tires (rears wheels are 15x10 with 275/60 tires) they seem to fit fine, however the gap from the tire to the front of the passenger wheel well is very very close. Like an 1/4 inch gap… the driver side has at least an inch room from wheel to body. Car seems very straight, had it up on a lift, no obvious signs of damage or anything that would seem to make it “not straight” the axel is lined up properly and the body gaps from doors, fenders,hood and truck all seem to be pretty consistent. And the body lines all line up really straight. Is this Normal?

maybe get creative and make a spacer for the spring hanger........nothing is ever easy :BangHead:
 
Yeah that’s what I was thinking. That’s gonna be my “all other resources exhausted” last resort.

I disagree, something is wrong, check other measurements. There are tooling holes in chassis. Or, take to a frame shop. Is the car dog tracking down the road? Have someone drive it and follow in an other car from distance, it will tell you.

Ok I’ll have to have someone follow me. It doesn’t seem like it dog tracks to me, but I have only driven it very short distances as I am working out other bugs and issues.

I appreciate your help.
 
I made some spacers and did this very thing by moving the rear axle back 3/8" on the Duster.

Something is off. Make sure the front spring hangers are the same dimensions on both sides. Dodge and Plymouth use different length hangers.

Really?? I wasn’t aware of this. I’ll definitely have to look into this.

62 Plymouths have the axle biased toward the front of the rear wheelwell opening.(gen 1 chargers seem to be the same way). I redrilled my ss spring hangers to move the rear backwards a full inch. Room for a 30"tall slick now.
A full 3/8 spacer between the front hanger and the body wouldn't bother me a bit. Just need longer grade eight bolts, and whatever other mods are necessary.

Yeah I’m going to have to do some more in depth investigating. Spacers honestly wouldn’t bother me either, I have a few things to look into first. But of all else fails, spacers is the route I’m going.

Hi. My 66 is the same way. Doesn't dog track, drives true,no drifting or pulling. Has had a few alignments and all is well on align. machine. I'm not worrying about it. I guess some one could ck. other Chargers. I'm not sure it's a big deal, in my mind at least.

We have 275x60 on a 8x15 rim 4.5bs. It’s been driven to Detroit, Jefferson City Missouri and other trips. Haven’t had a problem. Suspension all stock.
