Well that could be a bad armature or the outer magnet winding. Each can be checked with an ohms meter for continuity. I myself have never found a bad one. Brushes were mostly the problem. Worn bushings made them either tight or noisy. And the bendix would wear out. Maybe a bad solenoid now and then.
Advanced Auto carries the brushes, bushings, solenoid and bendix. Napa should too.
Also you could always swap the nose section onto a starter that works. I believe that's the only part that has visible numbers on it...
I'm taking a wild guess that's your original, having a "69" molded in the circle.
Hi, kryslerkid, Thank you for your letting me know some valuable information to me. I have both auto parts stores in my home town. I'll stay with this project.
Found a shop that specialized in rebuilding starters and other electronics in my area. They rebuilt the starter for my 460 F**d engine in my 72 Lin***n. This was a number of years ago and it still works fine. Most of the large parts stores buy that stuff from places that mass produce reman's that sometimes work and sometimes don't.
The other alternative is a ministarter which is not OEM (if that's important to you) and they ain't cheap.
