Where to buy correct 63 Polara 500 pushbutton shift cable?

Does anyone know where I might find a new shift cable for my 63 Polara 500, 727 pushbutton? It seems like my sleeve has cracked and no longer lubricates. Can't push the buttons until engine is fully warmed up. Looking for correct OEM or repop cable if I can find one but on some sites I can't tell if what they sell fits a Polara or not.

This is the outfit where I bought my cable for my '63 Plymouth. Not cheap but was correct. I had gotten along for several years before having to buy the cable by sealing the leak my cable had at the bottom housing with epoxy.

Yeah I saw them and hilltopparts but was not sure if these were only for imperials or not. Price is cheaper than the one they have at hilltop that is for sure

I might have to get under there and see just what is going on with my cable before I replace it

Mine had a rip in it about 2-3-inches long to the bottom fitting. Repair likely would have lasted longer if I didn't have to adjust the wheel. Kind of a bitch of a job as you have to hold the wheel true flush to the VB while rotating the wheel to get the proper adjustment while your partner keeps pressure on the R button...one of those chores where a 3rd hand would be nice...

Another alternative is find a nice used one.

As long as your original cable isn't frayed, you can repair your old one with the heavy duty shrink tube as used for electrical wiring. Then give it a lube job.

Thanks I might try that as the cale is pricey to replace and I might get away with a repair. Thanks for the tips.

Yeah forgot about Joey; have bought several items from him...anyway I must have been lucky with imperial as I had no problems with them.

I had dealings with "him" (Imperial Services) on a trans mount. Never again.

Buy your Imperial Services parts from a vendor, not directly from him. Joe Suchy should have almost anything you need and if he doesn't, more than likely he'll find you one.
 
If it still slides freely, repairs are easy. Use the heat shrink tubing with the glue in it. I seal every one at the crimp as well to prevent fluid leakage.

Yes as you and Khryslerkid have pointed out, the shrink tube is the best way to repair if the cable is decent enough for repairs. I did a shortcut fix that didn't require pulling out the cable and fittings and got lucky it worked out fine for several years. But if one would do what I did and it didn't work out, it would be time for a new cable as the epoxy is a one time irreversible mess...
 
Thanks to you guys I got my new cable from Joe Suchy. It is an Imperial cable but looks to be a perfect replacement.

When I took the old cable off the pushbutton control I noticed that the cable end was just set over the pin and there was no washer and clip on top. In other words
the only thing keeping the cable end from popping up and off was that they had somehow squeezed the u shaped slot in the bracket together once the cable was inserted into the slot.

Does anyone make the correct washer and retaining clip for this?

I am trying to adjust the new shift cable at the transmission end and need to know what position they mean when they say it should be locked into the reverse detent position when you set the wheel and put in the lock screw. Is the reverse position when the lever and cable are pushed into the trans as far as they can go? Or is it one of the positions in between? I assume it is all the way in because they say to push in on the cable until it is in the reverse detent position.

Also, if it ends up that the o-ring on the end of the cable sleeve is all the way into the cable hole in the trans won't it leak like crazy? Not sure if that will be the case but it sure looks like it might be

I goofed up with the reply due to lack of space. You should have a visual if not done this before. You need a helper to hold the reverse button in while you insert/adjust the cable. I'd actually prefer another down below to just steady the cable; but can do alone. Make sure the wheel is backed off exposing a half inch or so of threads (assuming you have inserted the cable end). If the cable is seated and the wheel doesn't come near to the valve body then rotate the wheel clockwise so that it is near to flush. You want to make sure the wheel isn't cocked so ya hold the cable in position to do this to achieve a flush contact with the VB while you rotate the wheel to seat flush to the VB. Once the wheel is seated flush rotate the wheel clockwise to nearest hole...then while holding it in position...rotate the wheel counting next four holes to align for bolting in. Insert bolt - be careful - this is aluminum - do NO
 
Ok, having some posting issues...to continue, don't overtighten the bolt as it can be stripped ahhh...I know. It's likely this bolt has been in and out many times for adjusting if tranny hasn't been refurbished, spec's say torque to 75-inch lbs. I do a bit less. Make sure the O-ring is seated and add some lubrication to threads and ring before seating it; but could already have tranny oil in good quantity if oil hasn't been drained or you're installing a new cable.

I understand the main instructions from the service manual, my question is really just for the lever that the cable attaches to in the VB which position is reverse? Is reverse when the cable would be pushed into the VB as far as it goes? In other words the lever would be pushed all the way towards the rear of the tranny?

Attached is a pic (yes it's blurry but I think you can see what I mean). The lever circled in red is the one that the shift cable pushes or pulls. I just need to know to the correct position for the reverse detent is with that level pushed all the way to the left as seen in the photo. Thanks!

When trying to figure out why the park lever was floppy I found a broken spring up under the dash on a ledge. It is the spring for the park lever shown in your image. Does anyone have one of these they would part with or know where I might get one?

I figure while it is apart I might as well make it right
