Hi, i am about to measure for my new driveshaft wich is going in my -65 Coronet and im wondering how far to push in the slide yoke before backing it out 1 inch?
I would say push it in so it lightly touches the dust boot and then out 1 inch (see arrow in the pic).

And as far as i know the correct procedure is: Car on all 4 wheels in level position, full tank of gas and 1 person in the drivers seat.

Just making sure i get this right since there is no dust boot on the old rear seal and the boot is about 1 inch long.

Thanks for the help.

What... who told you car needed full tank of gas and a body in the seat ? Unless you're setting suspension for the car to do one particular thing perfect that isn't true

Slide the slip in until it bottoms out and then measure center to center with the weight of the car on the rear suspension.

Then see your local driveline shop tell them it measured __.__" and the slip was bottomed out in the trans and then they'll make up the diff you need depending on the slip you have.

. Don't worry about that added piece of rubber being smashed against the slip yoke.

Yup! JUST did this. The driveshaft guy was so confused by my inability to describe to him what I was measuring that he came to my house! The driveshaft builder will leave you enough space that you can still remove the driveshaft with the rear yoke and the trans in place. This means you need a little room to slide the slip yoke further onto the trans to clear the rear u-joint to remove. Also, as you can imagine, the slip actually moves in and out (a little) as the suspension moves under the car, since the rear yoke actually gets closer to the trans as the suspension compresses.

Super is right, your shop will tell you what they want as far as the measuring points. Also recently did this: car setting on the ground, yoke all the way in, back out 3/4", measure from the center of the u-joint cap/receiver on the yoke to the center of the same on the pinion. I'm sure shops vary on what they want to see. call 'em. good luck...
