Which ATF for Mopar's A999 trans.

What is the recommended ATF for a Mopar A999 trans. with electronic activated lock-up torque convertor?
 
Dexron 2 or 3.
I actually run Ford Type F though. IT is supposed to provide firmer shifts.

Thanks for the input. I used Type F in the past, but wasn't sure about this particular trans.
After I posted, I did find that Dexron II was recommended. I have plenty of Dexron III on hand so I'll use that. Thanks again.
 
I used to run Type F. It got hard to find. Walmart Dexron in my racecar. No issues. Car makes 900hp.

From what I read and hear, the ATF+4 does a good job in the older transmissions too. ChinaMart (Walmart) is usually the cheapest place to find it but they usually do not stock enough for a full change. I have two WM's near me and I usually buy all they have and then ask them to order more. One even called me when a new supply arrived. Advanced Auto will put it on sale from time to time too. Sounds like I go through the stuff but when I do maintenance on my cars, I usually do them all at the same time.

Mopar +4 was created specially to prevent shudder in lock up trans, which leads to converter clutch failure and plugged up cooler which leads to the rear part of the trans that is oiled through the shaft to fail- very expensive
If you have a lock up run the +4 which is a fully dino oil synthetic with a PREMIUM additive package- a very cost effective solution/ compromise
ONLY thing better is Allison Transend 295 especially if you get the Citgo Quatrosyn brand which is a true fully synthetic with an even more el primo additive package but is IS PRICY
Now as to type F never run it in anything except in old FORDS and late Fords where it is required for power steering- it has very low lube and NO friction modifiers
It does shift harder but there are other ways to get a good shift- and a good shift does not break parts or tear the facings off your clutches
If your service manual is old and says DEX or +3 that info has been superseded for all lock ups for sure
+4 gives superior cold AND hot weather performance (but the Citgo is even better for you snow plow or towing guys)
If you have an OD you know how fragile the planetary thrust washers are and how easy it is to smoke them- again Plus 4 or Quatrosyn
incidentally Chrysler switched to +4 for Power Steering in 2000 and I would recommend for all with the GM type pump- I'm checking for use in the Chrysler/ Thompson pump as the approved fluid for those is getting really hard to find (even if it is a better pump) but to a complete drain and flush and fill- not just a top off

Thanks to all for the input. I did decide to go with ATF+4.
Today I removed the 904 and installed the A999. Tomorrow I'll wire in a switch for the lock-up then add fluid and hopefully go for a spin.
 
My friend who runs a transmission shop claims atf+4 is best for any mopar, old or newer.

The +4 is good stuff. If you need a firm shaft, get a shift kit and premium clutchs/bands.

Back in the 1980's when type F was popular in the Mopar transmissions, it was recommended, I believe, by Marv Booth to add a quart of straight 30 weight non-detergent oil for lubrication.

Viagra or Cialis is good stuff. If you need a firm shaft, get a prescription and warn the wife that you are on your way home.

Back in the 1980's when cocaine was popular in the party scene, it often made it difficult to "get up to speed". It didn't matter what you used for for lubrication.

actually true - TF can run on straight motor oil in a pinch
and your friend is right +4 IS (or was- or almost) the best for ANY mopar and actually for any DEX III or Merc (not the latest DEX VI or Merc without some testing)
Quatrosyn - the Allison 295 spec synthetic stuff is later and better and can be used for DEX III or VI drain periods per Allison are doubled or tripled with 295 spec, it can run 450 degrees for long periods without tranny loss (some places in atranny get much hotter than a temp gauge shows)
GM does NOT support DEX III anymore so there is some absolute crap out there claiming to be DEX III (and universally everything else) compatible
as I may have said I just switched my dakota PD to type 4+ It really is a premium cost effective fluid
Let's look at the theory +4 (and Dex VI) are thinner at room temp than DEX III so it flows better (and in PS thicker is harder to steer) and being "synthetic" they do not thin out as much with heat. The Citgo Quatrosyn being "fully" that's type IV-VI type synthetic not type III like +4 thins out hardly at all- needs less "modifiers" those things that shere down over time t's even thinner cold than DEX VI so it works better when it's really cold and being best available base stock works better when its really hot there are a few other blenders that I trust- redline for one- there's also snake oil...
you'll notice on the EUROSPEC motors oil that they are made from Natural Gas not crude... that's a clue to premium base stock I'm using Mobile 1 0W-40 in most everything under $25 for 5 quarts if you stoop to shopping like Wally world
 
In high school my daughter drove the 77 Pacer Wagon- wife bought new
we live at the bottom of a long downhill driveway and rear band life was not too good with daughter firing up the Pacer and flying backward up the driveway before the converter even got a chance to fill- transgo kit helped with that
but answer was 999 guts out of a Dodge cop car into an AMC V8 case-- double wrapped band, more clutches what's not to like
I have an RV converter- did not have time to do lock up but I also have a 518 from a jeep and an AW- 4 od trans also out of a jeep and a 4.0 EFI motor- another project

My first wife had a 75 Pisser I mean Pacer. Some cool innovations were built into that car. Lots of glass but very little wind noise for the day. Longer passenger door than the drivers door for ease of entry into the back seat just to name a couple of things. Too bad they turned out to be pieces of junk.....
