So I drop the engine in yesterday and go to put my stock height MSD Pro Billet Distibutor in and it does not clear the side of the heads, even with some grinding on the heads. I can't believe I did not check this first. It fit OK without the intermediate shaft installed, but after I primed it, and installed the shaft, the distributor won't clear. The valve covers should not be a problem as they are old steel Direct Connection pieces.

I see a taller MSD Pro Billet 8546 on Summit, and am curious if it will clear. It does not have a vacuum advance which is unfortunate as this is a street car, but with my 108 LSA roller cam it probably does not matter. What distributor works with these heads?

Thanks and have a good week.

Mine has a 440 source. The corner boss of the front upper bolt hole is ground for the retaining clip for the cap.

Thanks guys. I ordered the Firecore. Mancini says it is a narrow body to clear larger heads. Sweet!

MSD #8546 fits with INDY Heads

crate 1.jpgI have INDY Heads. The correct distributor to clear everthing is the MSD #8546 which is the exact one that I have and it fits fine, even with the tall (and thick) INDY valve covers.

A $75 source distributor (with vacuum advance) and 5 minutes with a die grinder. Or Fire core $165, or $290 MSD distributor, umm? Guess I'm cheap.

Thanks again. It will be on the road by June.

After 10K miles on a strong 383, I went away from high zinc oil and switched to Mobil 1. Wiped out one lobe on a flat tappet Mopar cam within 1K miles.

This 493 engine was meant for a 64 Plymouth, but found a home in the Road Runner. Should look quite interesting anyways.

I may be in deep sh... with my new build as far as the distributor. I have a old iron Hemi tach drive magnetic that works great. I really hope it fits with Indy heads, not confident.

I'd like to pick up an old NRC for myself. Let one go on the Aspen. GRRRR

The fire core fits great. And the factory two wire connector is nice as it just plugs in.

I think I probably removed 1/8" from the corner of the head nearest to the distributor. With the stock diameter electronic style replacement, I have 1/8" clearance. If it is any wider than mine, it won't fit.

My last set of Indy heads I used a cast iron tach drive, minimal grinding.

Ha! Yesterday's UPS delivery. Gotta detail clean it, and I'll be ordering a new belt.

I know I've seen it posted here before but couldn't find the post, it was the same question regarding the rpm heads and distributor clearance. Does the 8546 work on the eddys?
Thanks
