I've run into this for years and years and well, it's time to set this straight. The right side of a car is the passenger side so that would make the driver side be the left :D . Think about it....the front of the car is like the front of a person. You can also think about how you sit behind the wheel. Your left side is the same as the car's. Many people seem to be cornfused about this and hopefully this will help with that.

In my line of work I always refer to it as drivers side/passenger side. Left side/right side is just confusing.

When it gets real confusing is when you are speaking about the right and left bank of an engine, and its mounted transverse.

I usually do too but a lot of people who usually don't mess with cars come in and start talking left side/right side and it doesn't take long to figure out that they don't know which side is which. Recently my daughter came to me and said there was something wrong with her right front tire and when I went over there to look she change her mind pretty fast lol. She knows what side is which too.

I also use the passenger side / drivers side when talking cars..just to be sure..incase the other guy is not clear on right left LOL
AL

If you turn around , the left side dosnt become your right side. Why should a car be any different!

The "Right" or "Left" side is determined from sitting behind the steering wheel.

In England, they call them curbside & offside, how about that......

Interesting.

Hey, Pops, you should start a thread on auto related names from different countries.

Some people don't even know their right from their left, compounding the confusion!

When dealing with the novice, driver's side, passenger side. When ordering or replacing parts, you better know your right from your left!

I go thru this left/right crap at the shop daily! It's NOT that hard........

Then you have to remember the flywheel. Standing behind the engine with the flywheel being closest to you.

What gets me is someone calling a engine a motor!

You guys crack me up. This sounded like an Abbott & Costello's Who's on first.......

You never hear anyone call a motor an engine tho.....wait....I did hear someone call it that once!

Absolutely correct. Any parts manual or body parts data will concur. Left= driver side & Right= passenger side. ( As it is, here in the US of A ! )

I go by if you can be inside the object as a car you go driver side as left all other things you stand in front of and call it the other way around

What about when someone ask what the VIN number is? I look at them and ask Why does my VIN need a number?

The Port side is where the helm is, Starboard is where the crew sits. :headbang:
