...Just like watching my Pittsburgh Pirates snuff out the Yankees! I wasn't alive until 1968.

These days, the Pirates suck. The owner does not want to field a competitive team, truly sad.
However, I do remember "Bucco" teams as a kid that were very competitive for years leading up to 1979 World Series.
... which was the last championship, of their grand total of 5, the Pirates won, correct ? ( Psst, trivia: what do their 5 championships have in common ? )

I just posted the HR link. I didn't make the video or claim it was "the greatest".
Nor did I claim the Pirates were anything they're not. Chill the f out Yankee fan.

Willy Stargell? (Might have got the last name spelled wrong)

@WileERobby Yes, 1979. You stumped me, but I'm no "super-fan". They've disappointed me for years!
@Ceedawg Yeah #8 "Pops" He had a unique warm up swing. Incidentally, I went to HS with his son.

On a thread almost 2 years old for deceased HOF pitcher, you decide to post "the greatest home run" clip which is a direct dig on the Yankees. Why did you decide to "just post the HR link" ? But, your skin is so thin, you can't take a rebuttal ? Grow a spine, Pirates fan. ( I'm just mirroring YOUR nasty reply ) I guess YOU can't take a little needling, eh ???? You should chill the f out.

So, as was my intent for a little friendly needling, The answer is: the Pirates won all their championships in 7 games, all 4-3 series. Harry... keep the change.

I dunno...From what I see of the nightly highlights of the games, it looks like the Pirates have a young
team that's pretty darn entertaining and competitive, at least sometimes?
Those Orioles can be a lot of fun to watch this year as well, too.
Both unexpected.

Yes, we all imitated Willie's batting stance and warmups - along with all the other great players of the
day in the early 70's. Joe Morgan's "chicken wing", for example.
My favorite? (I grew up in Atlanta) Hank Aaron's warm-up/swing. Although I'm left-handed, I mirrored
his mannerisms almost exactly at the plate for all of my playing years, up until I walked away from the game at 17.
Dumbest thing I ever did....walking away.

Problem is, small-market teams can't compete with the big dogs ( NY, LA, etc. ) unless they get a fortunate combination of good young players... then the big dogs get them in free-agency. The players union have spoiled the game. I don't go to MLB games any more, not contributing to the multi-millionaires piggy bank.

I agree with all of that - which is why it's fun to see a bunch of young players jell and play well like that.
Reminds me of that Miami team some years back that came out of nowhere and won it all.

Re: cost of a game - by bud took me to a Braves game last year for my birthday. Cost wound up being
about $250 each for decent tickets (Chop House!) and some stuff to eat and drink.
Add a hotel overnight, gas and good Lord....
How that game continues to be viable given the money being thrown around is beyond me.

Harry !

As far as the Pirates, it's hopeless until they are bought buy owners who want to win. Basically, they're a farm club.
And Yes, I apologized to WileERobby. :drinks:

And by the time they do, they get scooped up by big $$ teams. Like the Yankees, who throw money at players, but won only 1 championship in 20 years. Because they don't get the right "mix" of players together, like the Yanks of years ago, or the Braves, Orioles, Reds, Pirates, A's, who've all had good runs of teams that were put together with the right mix of players. I go to minor league games. Where they hustle, don't admire themselves, and don't wear gold chains like they're posing for a fashion statement on the field.

Here's another one of my topics gone to **** because of a couple of ******** that have NO RESPECT for the dead!!! Why don't all you fuckers chill the **** out and start your own ******* topic about home runs!!!
MODS-- Please lock this topic, thanx
