Who has a daily driver more than 30 years old?

When you think about retiring does it cross your mind how you will pay to repair the computerized car or truck you use to commute on a daily basis?

I wouldn't have retired if I couldn't afford to fix them. Better yet, I'd make sure I could afford it before retiring.

Bought a 87 new Yorker, 2.5, got it going

Got about 1000 miles on it, when the water pump belt shredded, because of a broken alt belt. Wife drove 30 miles not knowing. When she parked , the upper radiator hose BLEW OFF

I fixed everything, runs perfect, no damage to the head

I will be looking for more of these 2.5 cars

This was a turbo, somegiy updated to MPFI , and removed the turbo engine

My daily is a 2000 Chrysler 300M with a 3.5L HO.
Very low maintenance comfortable gets almost 26 mpg and it will run forever.
Truck is a 93 Dakota with a 5.2 Magnum with a 46RH trans (swapped from a 3.9L) a bulletproof setup.
I wouldn't buy a daily driver that has a carburetor, not that I don't trust them, fuel injection is just better.

Your wife and or kids will ride in the bed without seats and seat belts? I would imagine that the police wouldn't let that slide in 2019.

I was joking about the other 4. BTW, that photo is my daughter's family beside the car.

We used to ride in the pickup bed during the summer when I was a kid. Sadly, they outlawed that. It was a great experience.

I have been wifeless for over 30 years. When Dennis and the Mrs. visited I borrowed my 81 year old Mom's Chrysler 300 to chauffeur them around town. There's not many times I need more passenger space. But when I do I can always arrange to get another vehicle for free.

Life changed my retirement plans more than once. So, I caution you to hope for the best and plan for the worst. Murphy is omni-present.

In other words, some people choose when to retire and some have the time chosen for them.

I swapped both the trans and the motor, I was just referring to the original motor size.
Both are rebuilt.

I actually used the trans from the V-6 for one summer. It was weird though the flex plate didn't line up with the torque converter.
I actually hogged out one of the holes to bolt it up since I knew it was just temporary.
Sure enough by fall the bolts came loose even with locktight and proper torque.
Luckily I caught it in time and swapped it out with the 46RH, which is not a real easy job from below with the truck on jackstands.

Not quite 30. I drive a 91 s 10, 4.3 ,4x4 with 55000 miles every where. It only gets 18 mpg but is a good little truck. It spent most of its life setting in a carport.

the heads used to crack on those models , and gasket problems too, I did so many back in the day.what a easy job to , takes 20 minutes to get the head off, love to do them great car . my dad bought the first k car with 2.6 Hemi junk Mitsubishi motor in it , then he bought a new 86 k car with 2.5

I was aware of that, previous owner put a gasket on. I'm amazed it seems to be ok

I'm fighting an alt belt squeek right now, I think that is what broke the belt/lower bolt

Upper bushings are shot, and missing the spacer between the alt ears

So far, head seems to be ok!

They improved the head gasket for the 2.5.
The trick to those is making sure the dots on the belt pulleys are lined up AFTER the belt is tensioned.

tx9 black 1970 Imperial coupe and FY1 top banana 1970 Challenger 340 (A66 package).

Challenger works better in the big city for parking lots etc

My good old 1977 Dodge W-200 Power Wagon is a daily driver. It started life as a M882 Army truck (CUCV program) assigned to a Special Forces unit. After it was declared to be too beat to continue front line service with the snake eaters, it was transferred to the US Forest Service and spent a couple of decades off roading work crews in the north woods. I bought it from a broker in 2011 and I am the first civilian owner. It had only 66,000 miles when I bought it, but it needed a lot of help. I went through the 318 and Torqueflite, rebuilt the carburetor, complete brakes fore and aft, new ring and pinion for the front diff (Dana 44) , new prop shaft for the transfer case to front differential. Whew. Runs like a top now and I take it off roading all the time. It's my heavy snow go vehicle too. Infotainment systems, air bags, computer controls, who needs that crap? :-D

DD & weekend warrior. Typically drive 60 mi one way to the track, beat on it and then drive it home. This year my son and I took it on Drag Week 2019. A couple weeks later I drove it 300 mi round trip to compete in the IHRA Team Finals and then 2 days later drove 1890 mi round trip to Memphis to compete in the IHRA World Finals. This year I was the IHRA Sportsman Class track champ which got me invited to compete in the Team and World Finals.
