Who has replaced a power steering box in a Hemi car with stock manifolds???

1966 car if it matters. The box is bolted in, steering column out, torsion bar out, starter out, exhaust hanging in place.

It was always tight getting a manifold off and on with a manual steering box. With the PS box in place it’s looking just near impossible. What’s the trick short of dropping the whole engine, k- member and transmission out?

The manual calls for removing the box from the top by raising the left side of the engine. I put it in from underneath but I’m stumped on the manifold. There is literally only about 1-1/4” from the head to the lash adjustment screw.

The only car that I've been able to remove a steering box from above is a car with a slant six. Every other one had to come out from underneath.
The memory may be fuzzy on this but I'd think that as wide as a Hemi is, you'd have to rock the engine way over to make room to pull it from above.

I did it an Ebody, 71 Cuda, with stock ci manifolds 21/2" exhaust and dropped it from the bottom without moving any thing. I did replace it with a Borgeson box.

So you removed the box without pulling the manifold first? If so, that might indicate I should reinstall the manifold before trying to get the PS box in. Interesting.

I have to admit I have never thought about replacing a power steering box with exhaust manifolds.

I would think that it should go in easy, At least yours was built that way. Try doing it in a a body

I've done one in an E body. Stock street hemi exhaust manifolds

Pulled battery and tray. Power steering pump and brackets.
left engine mount bolts out. lifted engine to roll slightly towards the pass side. Removed pwr str box out the top

Well at this stage, without having to backtrack a lot, it looks like my best approach is going to be to raise the left side of the motor up to gain space to slide the front part of the manifold in over the gear box and into place.

I always pulled the PS box in my 67 out from underneath and never thought about trying to get it out from the top.

When i owned the 71 Hemi GTX, 4 speed car, for 32 years it was a manual steering car, by factory build.
I converted it to power steering, and don't remember any kind of difficulties at all, in doing that conversion.
The car has stock exhaust manifolds.
Back in the day you could go to the wrecking yard on a Saturday, find all the parts that you needed on a car in the Chrysler rows, pull all the parts, install everything on your car on Sunday, and then drive your car to work on Monday.
In my case the conversion required the steering shaft, to also be changed, in the column, and that wasn't any big deal to do either.
And all this was done in the driveway, and not on a lift.

I have a Hemi K frame and the stock hemi motor mounts. Maybe if you're using Schumacher mounts might be a problem. I don't remember loosening motor mount and lifting the engine. Dealing with a Hemi you know why they call it an "Elephant".
