If you look closely at those Caproni pictures, you can see in the bottom one how the plane is powered by a motorjet; a 900 hp. piston engine drives the front compressor blades before the compressed air is channeled to the afterburner combustion chamber. In actual testing, this engine/fan arrangement provided enough thrust to fly the plane without even using the rear chamber. In the third picture, you'll see the plane in flight with the canopies open. This engine heated the cockpits too much to fly fully enclosed.
