Blenheim aircraft from 60 Squadron RAF level out for the “run in” to make a mast-head attack on a Japanese coaster off Akyab, Burms in 1942

While the 747 was planned on carrying more passengers than anyone else, some airlines wanted a somewhat smaller verison, something that would compete with the DC-10 or Lockheed L-1011. So, Boeing shortened their 747 and created the 747SP. It was originally 'SB' for 'Short Body', but changed to 'SP' for Special Performance'.

And it was special. With a shortened fuselage, but having the same wing and engines as the larger type, this model ended up with superior takeoff performance and top speed, maxing out at 624 mph. with a 568 mph. cruising speed. Ultimately, only 45 of this version were built.

Another shortened Boeing product was the Boeing 720. Sometimes nicknamed as Boeing's 'Thunderbird', it was a shortened 707 with good performance. The first aircraft produced went to United Airlines, who set a speed record from London to Karachi, averaging 583 mph. for the trip.

One of the more famous versions of the 720 was the 'Starship', a jet outfitted for rental to rock bands.

Among others, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Alice Cooper, The Rolling Stones and Deep Purple used this as their tour jet.

My dad took my older brother & I to see the air show in Ohkosk in 1972(?) and we flew out on a 747. I barely remember the trip, but I do recall going upstairs to the lounge area and they opened the cockpit door for us to look inside and say hello to the pilots.
