Photo above gives some scale: the “Standard” size WW II Submarine in the front and the 3 Japanese Monster Subs of the I-400 series in the backdrop.
 
Those Aichi M6A aircraft were unique to the I-400 submarines with their folding wings and tail to fit in their 11 foot diameter hanger. To speed up launching, heated oil and water were pumped into the engine so they wouldn't have to waste time warming up before take-off.

At 400 feet long, those subs weren't matched in size until the Ethan Allen class nuclear subs in the early 1960s.
