widest rim/tire '69 GTX

I am new to this forum as I just bought my car. Looking to take the factory rims off and going to a pro-star/M/T street radial combo. Would the 15X10 with a 4.5" backspace work? I want the widest possible look without mini-tubs and keeping it inside the fender lip so it sits lower. Any help would be great.. Thanks and love this site...

I have P275/60R15 on 15x8 with 4.5" backspace and the tires rub on the outer fender when I bottom out. No problem with regular driving though.

You sent me a message about the wheels on my '69 Coronet,w/15x8" wheels w/4.5 backspacing and 275/60/15 radial T/A's,I wasn't able to send photos from my file for some reason,anyways, I have some photos for you,
from the leafsprings to the tires you have about 2 inches,on both sides,on the outer edge wheel lip,you can stick your hand up between the sidewall and wheel well trim.
this is the biggest tire/wheel combo you can fit on these cars without rubbing,don't let anybody tell you any different,I've had this car for 30 years,and I've had every type of tire/wheel on this car, I can load the trunk up and have a full tank of gas,and they don't rub at all!
as a matter of fact I went to "Mopars At The strip" in Vegas this year (600 mile round trip) I took a 512" stroker kit,Crank,rods,pistons,etc. about 150 pounds,plus I had some tools,and a bunch of other crap in the trunk too,probably over 400 pounds total,no problems.

We put Weld wheels on a '69 GTX that were 15x10,with 295/50/15 T/A radials.With that width the back spacing was 5.5".They do not rub except maybe at extreme angles/bump,like a bad curb.I don't have any digital photos,but if i find one I will scan it and post.It's a white car,stripe delete and a blue interior,it looks bad a$$ with those tires and is worthy of a post!

I ran that exact same combo on my 68 Roadrunner, since sold it. It rubbed in extreme angles.

hi would those numbers be the same for a 69 gtx with disc brakes all around.

I have the same car but mine is white, I been wondering how it would look in dog dishes as mind still have the factory mags, do you have any other pics of her from the side? Hopefully you still have her! Thanks in advance

I agree. I run the same setup on my 1968 GTX, but only on the back. The front are 255 60 15 on 15 x 7 inch rims, the new American Racing magnums.

Just pointing out that what works on a 69 coronet, may or may not work on a roadrunner/gtx. The dodge has a much more open wheelwell opening than the plymouth.
Edit. : I seriously doubt a 15x10 with 4.5 bs would work ! I think you would need much more like 5.5 bs, and then maybe a small spacer to get it EXACTLY where you want it.

Agree. I have found that if a guy wants to run 15x10 rims on the back of these cars, your backspacing has to be spot on. Just ordered a custom set for my 69 Super Bee at 5 3/8" bs. Those will not fit my 69 Road Runner however. I think I have 5 1/8 and 5 1/4 on the back of that car.

Haha I was looking up old threads to see what’s the biggest tire I can run without mini tub, I have factory mags on it now but thinking about a plain black steelie, but not sure I like it with my paint job. You guys have any suggestions?

First, this is entirely my own opinion, worthless as it obviously is.
I love the steelie/dog dish look, especially on dodges, I like the red circle on the dodge dish better than the plain plymouth. I would paint them body color for your car, even though I have black on my blue car (they actually belong on my butterscotch car, so they have to be generic black.
But..... My all time, looks great on everything wheel is a grey torque thrust, of whichever style has the right backspace for the application. Polished is great too, if you like that better.
As a variation of the everybody-has-those, I'm looking at some 17" American racing 200s (daisies).Similar style, still kinda day 2, but different.

I agree, the redline dog dishes are killer, I also like the plain black steel wheel, something about it is so aggressive, Not sure if I’m just used to the mags but feel like they look nice on the car, need to adjust the ride height in the front still though

You don't have to "if" you get the correct back space. Usually 5.25-5.5 depending on the tire. How ever I did minitub because I may go even bigger. I ran the old polished centerlines with the 5.25 back space and they were perfect! 1988
