Will a stock 400 smoke the tires?

that's what I used to build my 451 that's in my car. What's special about the 72 year? I had the cylinder walls measured and they were good, but a bit all over the place and no such luck for me on it having the massively thick cylinder walls mentioned for some of the 400 blocks, which I later found out is pretty rare.
400 230 blocks pre date code Oct 1971 had the thickest main webbing. That I believe are the strongest 400 block for stroker build. The 630 400s were said to have the thickest cylinder walls. Thus certainly more beneficial to a boost w/Nitrous setup.

Block condition certainly overrides any block cast type or year. But all things being equal? These are the targeted blocks for B- block builds.

Really? It looked just like my ‘69 383 crank. In fact, aren’t they the same?
No Sir = I do not believe so from factory. I run a 383 forged crank in my
400 as it is much stronger (although heavier) These cars are so old now that many
things have be changed over the years.

I think in stock form they would have a problem smoking the tires.
400 blocks are great for building stroker engines.

I had a 72 Polara Pursuit (400) that would shred the tires. You had to be careful if you punched it at about 30. Sometimes it liked to go sideways.
Heck our 72 Monaco 400-2 would smoke em.

Surely a lot depends on the tires?

My 2 barrel 318 Barracuda used to light up the tires. They were 195 wide re-treads I think. It was like the Charger in Bullitt going up the hill on every drive.

Once I put on decent rubber I had no chance.

It was pulled straight out of a 2 owner 4 door Newport. It was never apart. 131k miles. And it had a forged crank. They are out there.

Yes, yes it will.

Provided it's running correctly.

However, most 400's people are familiar with were in 4200 pound Cordoba's with 2.45 rear gears.

The 77 400 (2 barrel motor out of a van) that I had in my 70 Super Bee with 3.55 SG would smoke em as long as you wanted to.

If the car has radials on it, put on some old poly glass tires on and you'll smoke those..

If you do the actual math and remove the difference of gross vs net HP, you will see that there is only about a 5-10% difference in HP between the 71 and 72 383 and 400 engines.

The 72 400 has less compression but more displacement than the 71 383.

This is the time for all you "there's no replacement for displacement" guys to chine in in defense of the 400 (and 360).

I’m not Tony. He said it. But he did run an Alcohol rail in AHRA.
I believe he says he did. I watched a video where he talked about it, but I don't think he said he ever made a full pass

The guy wrote for several magazines in the 80’s. He drag tested new 5.0 Stangs and GN’s. I remember reading them.

He definitely has a ton of knowledge. I used to read those mags back in the day and really enjoyed the attitude and humor.
But you get a little older and wiser, the attitude wears thin.
I get sucked into his videos, because he seems like a friendly guy, and like I said he has a lot of knowledge.
But I think he has a problem with drawing the wrong conclusions from the facts at hand.
He has the white coronet, and the slant 6 dart, that both sound good and seem like cool cars. But he can't stay interested long enough to get either of them running right.
He goes to the track, brings all kind of legendary wrenches along, and the cars won't run. He should walk around and ask some bracket racers for tips.

I did this in my 73 with 340, had to back up to take the picture, but my engine is built closer to 71 specs and is also 350hp.

Every 400 car I ever owned was pretty fast for what they were at the time and yes could always smoke the tires. No, none of them were 12 sec cars stock.
