I agree. I know so many folks who want concert hall sound in a car with Flowmaster mufflers, headers, a 50-year old suspension design, and the windows down while going down the road. Ain't gonna happen.
Well the hole was also for the speaker. Look in the parts manual. In the 74 manual it mentions the 3501 280 for the passenger side speaker and 2580 690 for the driver side speaker. My car came with both....That's because they are not speaker holes. Our cars came with AM radios, which had one front and one rear speaker. The other hole is for a rear defroster fan that was an option. That's why the holes are not the same size.
You can make the defroster hole bigger, or just mount the speakers under the tray.
As for front speakers, I've always put mine in by cutting holes in the kick panels. There are a LOT of used kick panels on ebay for $25 or so, so if you don't want to cut your originals ones, get some used ones and cut them.
