Fresh rebuild....cam lube on cam and lifters......2500 RPM right after light off, without excessive cranking (primed carb), ran for 25 min 2000-2500 RPM. 10-40 oil with two bottles of zinc lube. Engine was oil primed.
-New comp 911-16 valve springs (125 on the seat...not excessive)
-New comp 280H cam
Removed oil pan due to a leak at the main seal cap. Got that fixed and decided to look at the cam lobes while I was there. Could see some but had to move the crank to see the rest.....the last one I looked at was wiped....gently wiped, but definitly on it's way out.:bs:

I've read alot about wiped lobes, but never had one myself until this....I guess it's time to research hydraulic rollers....

How do you think you did that? too tight of a rod? I have a hyd. cam and had over tightened a bit but it only left scuffs on the lobes all were still there and the same height.

I lost my first camshaft by trying the zinc additives to standard oil too.
It's only Brad Penn for me now!
I also sold a fuel pump pushrod to an fbbo member because of excessive wear using todays oils! I have read many other instances of hard parts wearing out in our older engines because of todays government mandated oil packages.
You'll have to really work hard at getting your engine cleaned out and free of the metal from your cam lobes......

I didn't catch my mistake soon enough & had to over bore the engine becuase I wiped out the cam from a lack of metal.

the way my machinist explains it is; modern oil is full of detergent to clean the metal surfaces. Zinc additive is try'n to bond to them. So there is a constant fight goin' on . If you are lucky the zinc will be the winner...

Not really sure how it happened......the valves were all set correctly prior to fire up. I think it's just an oil issue, or flat tappet cams aren't made the way they used to be made.....just like most things these days:bs:

Any symptoms while it was running (popping, spitting, coughing, etc)?

You have to run Oil with Zinc built in the oil. Zinc additive is fine for post break in. The proper oil has Phosphorous in the oil to keep the Zinc in suspension. It's my thinking this is another area where the Government has screwed us good. Just to protect cars with Catalytic Converter. another area where bureaucrat's just go to far. Also the blended oil with Zinc protects the push rod for gas pump and cylinder bores.

X1000! I've been using Valvoline VR-1 Racing for quite a while now and never a problem. Changed intakes on one of my cars recently and the cam looked good as new.

Huh ? What are you talkin about ? Isn't that a roller you got in there ?

i feel brad (lol) for you too...

that was bigman's pic, WileE; not sstocker's.

damn sstocker, that sucks...

i've never broken in a cam before, but i've heard you should use an actual break in oil.

comp cams and joe gibbs market it.

i dont think flat tappets are all that bad, if they seat right, they're quite durable

btw, im with Smitty, VR-1 is the best for flat tappets!!!

Nope....Purred like a kitten. Temp got to 230 for a little bit before I got my spray bottle of water going and then I was able to hold the temp to 210...no shroud in place at the time.....I had to build that too!

Yeah, I was confused 'cause I thought Bigman says he wore his cam lobe, but I was lookin' at a roller. Pardon me, being old school, I can navigate through the internals of an engine better than I can through these computer threads ! (.... now... where did I put those darn reading glasses ? .... )
