Thanks to a faulty Advance Auto Parts altenator, I smoked the wiring in by 68 coronet standard dash. I spent all day yesterday replacing and rewiring smoked wires. I can not find a short that is causing my right front turn signal lamp to stay on with the car off. I have decided rather than chasing anymore wires under the dash I am going to rewire the entire car. I have done some research today on this board and other places and I have a few questions comments about which route to go. I have complete aftermarket gauges including speedometer and tachometer and really only need to power those gauges the ignition and the lights/turn signals. I am running a MSD electronic ignition as well. I am not trying to restore my car to stock specs I just want to rewire it so it is reliable.

1. Painless wiring specific to the B-Body- Expensive, what do you get that is so much better than the universal? Do you get all of the terminal connectors for the switches and lights? Is it plug and play? I didn't get that from their instruction manual. The only connectors that it came with was for the headlights. It's not like I use any of the switches except turn signals head lights flashers and wipers.

2. Universal (ie Summit or Painless)- See 1 above.

3. The ISIS Intelligent Multiplex System http://www.isispower.com/about-isis-intelligent-multiplex-system.html

4. Any better ideas based on your experieces.

I definately want to eliminate the ammeter while I am at it.

Thanks

lots of good info HERE, but the site isn't layed out very well.

also EVENS is supposed to do fine work. only $110 for an engine harness.

neither of these are the universal stuff your looking at, just another way to go.

good luck

edit: found one of the pages i was looking for

AMMETER FIX

Thanks for the info, but these sites are only for engine harness's. I smoked my under the dash, so I need something for that, plus the ammeter site you referenced is to fix my ammeter. I would rather just eliminate it and replace it with a volt meter, which I already have. Thank you for your input and help but I am leaning in a different direction as I do not care if the car is stock or not. I just want to re wire it so it runs and is reliable. Thanks again.

well, the dashworx site has info on replacing the ammeter w/ a volt meter. but like i said, there site sucks for finding anything on it. easyer to call.
also, if you call Evens, i have heard but not tryed it myself yet, that they will build you all new harnesses at a very good price. i can't find the thread from another forum with the info, but that could make a plug n' play system easy to do.

ok here's the place i was thinking about for a pure after market set up

have fun

Oy, if you're gonna replace old smokey with an aftermarket, I've had a lot of success with American Autowire. None of the aftermarket harnesses are plug and play. You will have to get out the soldering iron and crimpers. As far as I know, none of them come with Mopar specific connectors either. (Shouldn't really be a problem in your case). Several members here have rewired their cars with different makes of wiring. Hopefully they'll chip in.

Year one sales them from a manufactured call M&H and they are direct replacement for factory wiring with all the right connectors pre made or so I have been told. I have only heard good things of thes harnesses. Hope this helps. Just get ready to shell out some money for them though.

I saw those. They even have the matching firewall terminal block we are all so fond of. Problem was they only had the dash wiring. They didn't have the engine harness to match. Which seemed odd, because they had lots of engine harness's to match their dash harness's just not for the 68 Coronet.

:angry1:Ughhhhh I hate soldereing. I can squeeze the heck out of a crimper though.:toothy10: So basically with all the harnesses you get a $hit pot of wire attached to a fuse block. Seems like a lot of money for a bunch of wire.

Check these guys out first....

I've used their kits numerous times. Not that much more expensive for a similar kit to what you are looking at. IMHO it's a better quality kit. They also make factory style harnesses for the restoration industry.

Quick side note on M&H. They are probably one of the biggest and best manufacturers of restoration wiring harnesses. They make some of the best stuff I've seen, (not infalable, but pretty darn good). They do make Mopar harnesses and can correctly make one for most any combo out there. The wrinkle is that Year One has a lock on all of their Mopar wiring. It's a proprietary thing from what I've heard. Sucks for me, I live within about 20 miles of those guys, but I have to order cross country.

All of their stuff is for GM and Ford, unless you get a special quote. I did not see a universal harness. M&H would be good if they blanked out the firewall terminal box and replaced it with a new school under dash setup. The Kwikwire universal setup that I am looking at (see above post) seems to be the lower cost option but quality stuff. Take a look at my link above.

Year One's offering is really the best way to go. Couple that with the MAD Electric ammeter bypass setup and your ride will be good to go. The after market offerings are based on GM and Ford set ups. M&H has the correct offerings for MOPARS. Albeit pricy. Just remember this...You get what you pay for in the long run. Or more simply...Why eat Hamburger when you can have the Steak...Just my 2 cents...

I do not like the terminal block at the firewall. Just my 2 cents. I am going to do away with th ammeter gauge as I have all aftermarket gauges including volts. So all I really need is a fuse block and good wires. Remember I could care less about returning this thing to stock.:toothy10:

Hey how did that EZ Wireing kit work out for you? I'm eye balling one now for my 68 Coronet.

Get it! You won't be dissappointed. Also save all of your terminal connectors from your old wiring so you can indentify the color of the wire to use this wiring schematic to help, especially to identify your turn signal terminals and your wipers.

All of the Quick Wire harness wires are marked as to where they go. For example Right Front Turn Signal. I mounted the fuse box under the dash. I used a metal electrical outlet block off plate to cover the hole in the firewall where I removed the terminal block. I put a groumet in the center hole and ran the wires through that.

I also put in custom gauges from Speed Hut.

I AGREE, only way to go.its a great replacement with direct bolt in.
just dont use a high amp alternator with stock ammeter.:angryfire:

That depends on if you want to keep it stock or not. The stock factory wiring harness is a piece of junk with the terminal connectors through the firewall. That is why I did not get the year one replacement. The quick wire product is also considerably cheaper.

Dan, my car doesnt have any of the original wiring at all. I'm taking a race car and putting it back on the street. What really is going to confuse me is how to wire the starting and charging system and how to splice in the original light pigtails.

The starting system and charging was cake. look at my picture above of the starter relay. The orange wire with the black paint was the starter wire that I retained everything else is new wiring from the Quick Wire kit. The instructions are self explanatory and like I posted earlier, use the factory schematic to assist. This was my first time rewiring a car, so if I can do it so can you. :nike:
