A parts car I purchased came with a 9 1/4 rear end. Not sure If it's posi, what gear etc. I have a 8 1/4 open gear (2.76?) on my daily charger.

The question is should I swap the 8 1/4 for the 9 1/4? Will bolt in just fine.

Will post pictures if you need them.

thanks,

jake

If you desire or need a stronger rear end and those are the two choices, I would use the 9-1/4.

Yup. However, if the 8 1/4 is doing fine, why not leave it in place until you need to change it. Chances are, the 8 1/4 will serve you well but depending on what engine you have in front of it will determine how long it'll last.

The 8 1/4 is open. 1 tire frier.

I have a 360

Dual Plane intake
Holley 750 DP
Headers - 3inch Exhaust
Ported heads
Big Cam

Because of the long *** gear in the back, my 0-60 is crap but will leave a black line with ease. From 4000 - 5500 Rpms it pulls like no other.

I was racing my buddies 2010 RS/SS Camaro, He won by a car length when we started from 0. Then we raced again from about 70. I spanked him.

I want to put a tall gear in 3.55-3.91, is that easier to do on a 8 1/4 or a 9 1/4?

I'd be swapping in the 9 1/4. They still use the 9 1/4 in the rams behind the hemi in the 1500's. They are a good axle and any junk yard can provide you with a set of 3.55 or 3.92 gears and a limited slip for cheap. I almost decided to run a durango 9 1/4 in my coronet because they are cheap and can be had with disk brakes. Ditch the 8 1/4.

Alright thank you. I checked the ratio today. IT's a 3.55 suregrip. I'm going to rebuild the drums and then put it in my car.

Thanks again,

Jake

Either rear is about the same to swap gears but since the 9.25 has a 3.55 and a SureGrip, I'd go with it for sure.

Would a Durango 9 1/4 rear fit under my 67 Coronet? If so, what would have to be moded and what year Durango?

I was told that Coronet axles are much smaller than charger rear ends. The durango-dakota 97 and under bolt into the chargers with little modifications to the shackles. Not sure how long the coronet axles are, but try measuring it and looking up the measurements for durango axles.

I guarantee that the 9 1/4" axle doesn't have a POSI. Also, the higher the number, the LOWER the gear. The lower the number, the TALLER the gear.
2.76= Tall, highway, freeway, long legged gear
3.91= Short, low, digger, drag gear.
Mopar limited slip= Sure Grip
Chevrolet limited slip=Posi-traction
Pontiac limited slip= Saf-T-Track
AMC limited slip= Twin Grip
Ford limited slip= Traction-Lok
Open/conventional differential= One tire frier, One wheel peel, peg leg, one legger, UNlimited slip, etc.

The Durangos are six lug. Or at least my 2002 is. The limited slip units on the later 9 1/4" have a common problem in that the hardened half round shims that catch the clutch ears break and start rubbing on the case sending metal everywhere. Pull the cover and look at the right side near the carrier bearing.

Alright, I will most likely have to take it apart anyways. The drums sound terrible when I turn the back wheels. Thanks for mentioning that though, is there anything specific I need to look for on the right side?

Just a bunch of iron dust and a big groove cut in the side of the case. And a magnet at the bottom of the case that looks like a porcupine.

This is to MEEP-MEEP or whoever can help, sorry about the double post.

When I switch the 9 1/4 to my other charger, what do I need to replace? I want it as new as possible.

Not sure about the drum brakes, so this is what I'm buying:

1. Drum hardware kit
2. New Brake Shoes
3. 2 New wheel cylinders

Is there anything I need to add, or don't need on that list? (I have a set of new pre-bent brake lines too)

For the rearend + rear suspension:

1. Leaf Spring bolts?
2. I can use my current Airshocks in my car?
3. What size u-joint of a 9 1/4 yoke?

Again, if there is anything else I may need, or don't need let me know.

Thanks,

Jake
