Would you use these for cam bolts?

It appears my cam bolts barley scrape the aftermarket cam cover.
I saw someone using alloy steel button hex bolts. These definitely would work! From what I have read Alloy Steel should be about grade 8.
Would these still need a washer?

The one I'd use are different ones than in the first picture, that is just from a stock Walmart picture to give you an idea what they look like. The second picture is the real deal. Would these still need washers if I use blue loctite?

Use some 'red' lock-tite and rock and roll. I would use washers with those but then you may still have to take some meat off the heads. Personally I prefer flange-head like in your picture so I can use a wrench or socket on them (I don't like using small allens for anything with any torque) and I always have to shave them down some to get cover clearance.

I was a little weary of using shaved bolts since they wouldn't be equally balanced. Maybe that little bit doesn't matter?

Damn good reply.
I wouldn't bother with washers though, they don't really have a purpose in this installation.

IMO.....IF, you are considering a washer, consider an SAE hardened flat washer. Its thinner than a regulator washer and the same OD as the bolt head....and red Loctite.

Use the button-head bolts with blue locktite. No washers needed in this application as the bolts are in "shear", not "tension". Hell, ou could use grade two bolts in this application !! Clearance won't be an issue. Are you using a cam button?

As stated above, grind the heads down a bit. You will be able to torque them properly. A little loctite won't hurt, but proper torque is more important

I’ve never had a problem using regular hardware store grade 8 bolts.
No washers.

The head thickness on the ones I have here are .240” thick.

If someone can't put 30 foot pounds of torque on an allen head bolt maybe they should go back to playing with Barbies !!

I mentioned it because SMALL allen sockets sometimes round out easily...so I prefer hex bolts....but I wouldn't expect you to know that!
