After 23 years at my job I was called in and informed that my position has been eliminated! Isn't that just a fine how do ya do! So January 28th was my last day of work. Still getting paid until February 28th and then a severance pay in March. I am eligible for all of my retirement benefits so it's not all bad. Let the over paid old guy go first!

Sorry to hear that Biker. Look on the bright side...more time to spend with you car.

Why was your position eliminated and are you old enough and well off enough to retire?

That happened to my Dad in the early 80s at Tinker AFB. He worked there from about 1961 to early 80s. They offered him another job as a token but it was crap. So, he retired early. He was ready to get out of there, anyway. They had started filling positions with women and minorities to fill quotas and enforcing sexual harassment laws and such as part of the new policy. Dad enjoyed his retirement, church activities and grand kids. He didn't do anything he didn't want to until he passed.

I'd look at it as an opportunity to do what you want to.

That's good you got some bennies, I got nothing. I have been cut twice in the last 7 years, most recently in November due to budget cuts. So I am spending time finishing the car, and looking for another job!

Hit the nail on the head there. The last time I was let go, many years ago, was the best thing that ever happened to me.

That last line say's it all. Same happened to me after 26 years. The high (earned) pay plus the 5 weeks vacation and additional health risks make it too easy for employers let "old-timers" go. They would rather deal with inexperienced cheap labor and questionable quality issues for their greed.

About the same time my Dad was let go, I was let go due to the oil bust in Oklahoma in the 80s. I joined the Army, got out in 3 years, went to college and got a BS degree and now I'm a fingerprint examiner making way more than the machinist job I had paid.

Sorry to hear about you losing you job like that. About ten years ago I took an early retirement so I could save the job of a friend at the shop I was working at. Some of the younger guys got laid off anyway, but the ones I am in contact with landed on their feet and are doing fine now. I know it's depressing when it happens, but take the chance to learn something new and maybe work at something that you really like.

Sorry to hear that has happened to you. I was part of a department that was let go years ago and jobs where hard to find at that time. It was hard times for awhile but I am doing great now in a job I love. Hope you find something you like quick!

I feel your pain. Several of us were laid off in July, but they brought me back a month later. I got laid off again three weeks ago, and now I'm going back on Monday. Plus I have three interviews next week as well.

The first time I ever got laid off was in 1999, and a wise co-worker told me losing your job is always terrifying, but usually ends up being the best thing that could have happened to you because you end up with a better job. I've been laid off six times since then, and he was right. Every job I've moved to has been better than the one I left, and I never would have gotten them if someone hadn't kicked my *** to the curb and made me look for it.

Bummer man, happened to my wife in 09'. At least you get your retirement. cool beans for that. Think of it this way now you have more time to build mopars!

ya, unfortunately or fortunately it does happen. Especially during these times. I trust you saved and invested when you could and will do OK. enjoy life a little...

Sorry, man, hope it works out! My dad planned on retiring at about 62 or 63. He took an early retirement offer at 56 after his company got bought and the new owners started really screwing things up. He and my mom spent time with the grandkids, took trips, etc. Blessing in disguise. He got cancer and died when he was 63. If he hadn't been forced to retire early he would have never had time to enjoy what he had earned...

You must be in a kick *** job now then and getting ready to be in an even even better one when you hit those interviews. Why don't you buy the forum a round or two :)

As the old saying goes "one door closes, as another door opens". I hope that you find that job that will allow you to make it to retirement age and then look back on the obstacles you dodged your whole life (hopefully enjoying a beer on the beach somewhere).
