Anyone running Z- Alt oil. I purchased a six pack of it to try out.The guy who sold it to me at the MATS event made some points about how it penetrates porous internal surfaces with an infuzed moly that won't drain off the parts.Supposed to keep parts lubed to help with cold starting, corrosion and reduce engine temp. Just wondering if anyone has any personal experiance with this product or pulled and engine down after running this stuff. It is about the same cost as a good synthetic.

Anyone else run it? I'm thinking about dropping oil weight to a 10W-30 and wanted to find the right one at a good bang for buck to do it with.

try this.z-alt.com,I'm not finished reading yet I see you can get this at NAPA

The reason people are useing Z-Alt .the oil companys have removed the Zinc from the oil ,The newer cars dont require zinc.the older cars do,you can also use your same oil and use an additive ,Eastwood sells it.For me i felt my car used more oil with Z-Alt,but thats just me.

Thanks for the responses. I get why people are using it between the zddp and lack of chlorine, I was more curious on people's experience with it. It's interesting to me that you felt like you used more. Thanks for the input!

It seemed to use more oil,i thought maybe i should have used a heavier grade .I just went back to the regular oil and the zinc additive

I put Z-Alt 10W30 in the 67 w/383 last summer and put about 2000 miles on it didn't note any loss on the stick. Getting ready to change it before this season and got a deal on Royal Purple 10W40 so I am going to run that this year. If I drove the car year round I would stay with the 10W30, but I don't really drive the car during the winter months unless it gets over 60.

I should correct myself.i did have a leak at the back of the intake, forgot about that.I redid the intake and i used silicone at each end ,and now it s just fine.Anyone notice the felpro Gaskets have a wierd gasket for the ends of the intake, they are almost like a sponge

What's a good zinc additive? And do they actually add enough zinc?

Eastwood is suppose to be okay,im sure that speed shops would also know

Picked up 8 cans and a MoPar performance filter. I'll let you guys know if there's a noticeable difference or any long term difference.

I'll stick with the AmsOil 10-40 and Napa Gold Filter in the 440. Clen inside and great performance.

I dug into this subject long ago, and found Valvoline racing oil had the highest zddp for a motor oil; something like 1600/ppm(?). i didnt want to have to fool with additives and the like. it's not cheap though, 7.50 per quart on amazon. they make syn and non-syn versions.

ive been running non-syn 20-50 for three years now and it works great.

IIRC VV850 is syn and VV851 is non syn.

btw...ive heard brad penn makes a high zddp oil also, when i run out of the valvoline, im going to give that one a shot.

I use the Brad Penn oil- it's made in Bradford Pennsylvania which is about 60 miles from me. Mancini Racing sells it but I buy it locally. The 20W50 racing oil is what I use, and it says it's formulated for older engines with hydraulic cams.

I know it's been said here before but, any engine running a solid lifter or hydraualic flat tappet type cam should use oils with high levels of Phosphorus Zinc Oxide, mainly Zinc additive... Especially during ring & camshaft break in periods...

Zinc

What's a good zinc additive? And do they actually add enough zinc?

Lucas, Torco, Edelbrock, Lunati, Comp Cams & others all sell it as oil blends or additives, I use to use Torco Racing oils exclusively, it's pricey but, I've never had any failures due to oil... Your engine needs good "blood"/oil ,it's cheap insurance in the long run to use high quality oils, especially in a race engine, My 2 cents is EVERYONE don't be a cheap skates & buy high quality oils 1st... you & your engine won't regret it in the long run...

I would like to pass on what my Machingist has told me: additives to regular oil are not as effective because the oil is full of detergent which is clean all foriegn bodys from the metal & the additive is try'n to bound to the metals. so they are both fighting each other! Rotella truck oil used to have enough zinc to be used but it too has been decreased so its no longer a safe option.

The only reason I'm passing this on is because I tried to use conventional oil off the shelf for break-in like i have in the past & i wiped out my cam/ lifters, sent metal through the engine & now have to punch my cylinders out, replace my bearings &start from scratch! All because I didn't believei needed to spend the extra money on special oils!!!

Well, I filled her up with 20w-50, and put in a new filter and she feels great so far. I opted for the z-alt for the zddp's. The cool retro pull tab can didn't hurt either... Lol.
