What kind of paint/primer you guys use? I'm looking for a home brew system less expensive than the SEM stuff.

on a lot the cars I restore I use rattle can spray paint with just a light fogging on the car. I seams too work for me

I just use up whatever junk spray paint I have laying around and like mentioned spray it on very lightly, the down side is you have to wet sand most spray paint because it just clogs up the paper. If not wet sanding you might just buy a cheap primer of a different color.

The 3M Black talc is cheaper to use then rattle cans. Consider how expensive sand paper is these days you will use 1/2 as much.

Not cheaper than paint that will just go bad and be thrown away if not used. I believe you though, after this last car I'm ready to try something different, I'll have to give that a try next time around.

I noticed "white" powder is also available. I'm going to paint an F8 green RR and a B5 blue Dart. Would the "white" be a better choice? Tks.

I use old flat black rattle can's as well, but have seen the 3M dust coat before. Think i'll be giving it a whirl on this next one.

The darker the primer, the lighter the guide coat can be so you can see it easily. If you use a light color primer, use a dark guide coat. Also, you might have a more difficult time seeing any places that the paint is being applied too thin if you use a dark color over a dark primer etc.. My first car that was yellow had a black base coat under it....and my black Dakota had a gray base coat. These were factory paint jobs so someone who has more experience in painting than me (probably most people lol) could give you more info on that.

I've not used the white myself, but I imagine it wouldn't show up very well when cutting the clear coat.

After looking at both cars, I think the black powder would work better. Tks.

I use good lighting and watch my surface as I'm working cross cutting sanding directions. Most surfacing primers I use have a noticeable color change in cut/uncut.

I've just not been really huge on guide coat, I can typically see where I'm going without it.

I also use the 3M Guide Coat. Although rattle can paint will work, I have never liked the idea that some may be left over on the surface. Could lead to paint problems down the road. For the money get the 3M and use it. It can sit for years and not go bad as well.
