1975 ignition control module toasting another one..

Sometimes I ask myself what is this forum for?
Not always friendly here is it?
OP asks a question, many times I've seen them reprimanded for not buying the FSM and not using the sometimes irritating search feature.
Or someone gets annoyed when a question gets asked that's been asked before. The cars don't change, the problems don't change, but new people buy them and come here to learn, share the joys and heartbreaks of owning these cars and enjoy some comradery.

We only have a couple and one angry old man that likes to belittle a guy for his language barrier. "Sucked in".. amperage is a "draw" to any with half an electrical brain and I may only have a 1/4 of one left and know what Nacho meant !

I hear ya T and agree...........There is a ton of bad info out there and seems to be getting worse. So much is based on opinion rather than fact. I have more than likely added to the bad info as well but I try to be helpful and not comment on things I have absolutely no knowledge of. I'll go lay by my dish now.

Decent question. Some might confuse it for an automotive training site for newbies

Lots of different personalities. The unfriendliness usually starts with that one f#* king prick..

I agree. Buy the book. Do at least some kind of leg work. Something. Anything. Then come back with questions about something you cant understand. Most questions asked before have been asked a million times, or several times a week.
Better to initially annoy yourself with the search feature( which is actually very good) then to come across as a lazy slug and annoy everyone else first.

In most cases, the people with the answers had to , you guessed it, go and buy the Bible, to learn how to work on their cars and gain general automotive principles. The new people just want to jump in and cluelessly get all the information in the world at the expense of anyone else's lifelong dedication..

All that being said, I'd like to get into heart surgery. Where can I find a site that somebody will cut the crap and just tell me what I need to know already :rofl:

I wonder if these newer ECUs with the modern electronics inside can dissapate heat well. The innards are buried in whatever potting compound they use. The outside is just for show and the heat sink is just there for show.

Pushed in… sucked out… from the powerplant ( batt/alt ) point of view.

Does that clear a bit better my post?

Wow, you must be a carpenter. You hit the nail on the head a half dozen times in a row.

Unlike poster #66 who speaks volumes of gibberish and uneducated assumptions, who, couldn't hit the nail on the head, given instructions, size of the hammer, method used and time and how far to drive the nail.....just listen to the ramblings issued......aptly described as meaningless trivia.........in one word: "sad"........

This thread is almost as bad as the A Body Forum Coil thread

Anyways , remember when Summit Racing was selling an Ignition Module with the TO-220 Transistor mounted on the outside

They have since replaced it with a dummy cover

HI,
HHHMMM I did put in a blaster II coil, the rest is stock stuff? So could the Blaster II be causing the problem???Burning up the ICM
YES

MSD Blaster 2 - Oil filled or Epoxy filled

Was it the factory ignition coil that you replaced or something else

When I ripped apart the HI REV 7500 many years ago after it failed , it was made with the TO-220 Transistor and Dummy Cover

Yes the Transistor failed

He clearly states in his instructions not to bee used with a CD Type MSD Ignition Coil
May Destroy ECU

Get rid of that coil!

Sorry for the “maybe out of topic” reply but:

What are the specs of the Mopar Performance coil?

And compairing with the MSD blaster II

I'm a big proponent of the blaster ll coils( oil filled) . Used them on many different types of ign, zero failures. Not sure what the fuss is about.
Now the epoxy filled one..... have seen some on here where they bake the bottom out of it..

There are significant cost and electrical differences comparing TO220 versus TO3 power transistors. The major advantage of TO3 is they are a metal package, and many are rated to 200 degrees C, the TO220 package is plastic and only rated to 150 degrees C. For high powered audio amplifiers, typically they only use power transistors in the TO3 package. The other critical factors are the voltage and current specifications of the power transistor, and the type/amount of heat sinking area. Better products use the higher cost TO3 transistors along with larger heat sinks. We have been designing and sourcing consumer electronic devices for many years and there are no free rides or short cuts, the better products use the TO3 package. As an just an excercise while I was in China I contacted one of the largest factories building automotive ignition modules, I asked for a quote on a standard Mopar ECU they quoted $4.10 per unit in production quantities of 250 pieces. Note that this ECU used a TO220 transistor and small internal heat sink but if upgraded to a higher grade TO3 transistor along with a large external heat sink the unit cost almost doubled to $7.25.

Just my $0.02...
