I get it. A lot of people buy these because it's a fad or status symbol. Then they sink a ton of money in them never intending to use them for their purpose. They also pull that attitude on those that don't as if it's a contest.
My wife drives an 18 jl with a winch, small lift and on board air. She has done more off-roading then most of them and you can sense their attitude because she didn't do all the unnecessary spending.
Money always ruins everything. Ten years from now these people will be into the next big fad and I will still be driving my CJ-5
So if I'm ever in your area I will give you the wave and buy you a coffee , no hard feelings.
 
I use 4X4 only when road conditions demand -- period! I don't go off on trails, mud bogging, and I am building what I want for an ultimate street SUV. BTW, I have a '95 Jeep GC, high compression (10.2:1) 4.6 stroker, and am tuning a stand-alone ECU. Got it running awesome on 87 octane finally! I cringe when I see posts (on Jeep forums & FB) where guys chop up an otherwise pristine survivor.

100% gotcha, we may not be on the same paragraph but we’re certainly on the same page. I used to live a couple hours from the rubicon trail and could see it all first hand.

I’ve always built toys from older beaters, but I’ve gotta say starting with a clean example is not a bad way to live.

I recall 20-ish years ago there was a guy running a 5.9 ZJ in CalRocks (early rock crawling series). The jeep was his mom’s dd until she got something new. That thing got pretty rough, but I know for a long while the heated leather seats and a/c remained fully functional. Wheelin in style I tell ya!

Anyone running a Flowkooler water pump on the 4.0?
I have put a few on LA block Mopar's with good luck. I use to drive over one town over and pick them up at the facility when I lived in California.
My last pump lasted a year and that is terrible so I need to step it up a notch since I really love my XJ.

I have put a few on LA block Mopar's with good luck. I use to drive over one town over and pick them up at the facility when I lived in California.
My last pump lasted a year and that is terrible so I need to step it up a notch since I really love my XJ.

I have not - with a caveat... IF these are what Hesco uses, then yes I have, and I would recommend you run the other way. IF they are not what Hesco sells, then no, I havent but plan to next time I need a water pump on my XJ. And we all know that a 4.0 on an XJ is gonna need a water pump...
My original one went ~100k. The aftermarket replacement went about 20. The Hesco - yes, its a story - never got put on... for good reason. I sat and waited for the dealer to order one from Chrysler - and paid dearly for it - and its at about 75 now... Research the FlowKooler a bit would be my admonition and try one IF they indeed make the product and its not the one hesco uses.
Just my $.02.
Also... I forget what year it was, but the stock pump was changed slightly and improved, but does not interchange with the earlier ones; my Jeep is well before that change, but I seem to remember that yours is one of the later/last XJs, so yours might have the improved design OE. Cant remember when the change was, but I want to say it was 2000-ish.
 
In 1996 the power steering pump brackets were changed, as was the belt routing. The water pumps spin in opposite direction from the '95 and older. Other changes, I'm not aware of. I added the '99+ "Horseshoe" manifold to my '95 and had to do some custom stuff to get the water pump spinning the same way.

I know later (95-up, maybe?) 4.0s got away from a distributor and went to a multi-coil / coil-on-plug setup. They also changed the exhaust manifold/header design at some point, and added bellows in the #1 and #6 primaries due to the solid ones cracking. The 4.0 is torquey enough it can actually flex the block some, and it was enough to crack the 1/6 primary tubes due to their length. If you ever have to replace a header on a 4.0, make sure you get one with the flex bellows.

My `98 has a distributor and also my coworkers `98.

I had same issues that most did with exhaust header braking. The flex seems to do allot better.

My Flowkooler seems to be doing fine, it fit well. Like they mention be careful which one of the two available depending on hub.

Too bad you can't show off the fancy impeller after it is installed.

I THINK - i.e. dont quote me - that changed in 01 / 02 maybe. Pretty sure all XJs have a distributor. My 95 does.
Now yer gonna make me go do some research...:thumbsup:
 
I'm still looking for a Nice pre 2001 XJ, and they're tough to find. Washed out on the efforts in FL this year, they just weren't turning up...
 
The then all-new 1999 WJ Grand Cherokee got coil packs and a completely redesigned engine compartment lay-out. TJ (Wrangler) and XJ (Cherokee) kept the distributor until 2001.

Gotcha.

I had a pair of 92s (XJ and YJ) with distributors. My 06 TJ has coil-on-plug. I skipped a bunch of years lol
 
Got a free 98 TJ about 7 years ago from my BIL. It was nice looking with 250k miles on it. It had been rolled over on it's top once but all that was fixed....the soft top was fine because it was in his garage. The hard top got all broken up on the roll over so on went the soft top. Man, what a huge difference that thing makes as far as noise goes....wind and traffic especially on the freeway. Anyways, kept it for about a year then sold it when I found a really nice 96 Dakota. And well, I was happy to see it go to someone that appreciates those vehicles. They are just not my gig.
 
LOVE my TJ. Worlds better than my old YJ. The TJs coil spring suspension is light years better than the old leaf sprung YJ! And the hardtop makes it a real car, not a tent on wheels! Summer though...the hardtop hangs in the garage next to the doors and it lives in the garage totally open. Like a motorcycle, but without the helmet and riding gear. Well... and slow. But still a blast.
 
Something worth mentioning I did to my 77 CJ-5 with the 258. Some years ago I took the single barrel YF off and put a weber 32/36, I don't remember why. I probably thought it was cool.
Recently I got tired of the laziness of the acceleration so I put a Carter bbd two barrel. Wow what difference everywhere. It has easier start, smoother idle and cruise plus better acceleration.
Figured I might tell you guys about it in case you have one.
