To correctly recreate a missing fender tag, do I need have the build sheet, or is there some way to find the information with only the VIN? I think not, just want to be sure.

67 and earlier one can use the IBM buildcard.

Yes and then you probably still can't get it 100% correct, even with hours and hours of research.

No..
Call the people who make them and ask if they would make a Bare Bones Fender Tag they could even print as a “duplicate” tag or for “show only?” Worth a try? Or hell just find a Blank Tag? That would really blow peoples minds! Give them something to talk about for a long time!

You can get a metal tag done with a couple vendors - they usually want some proof of options and charge $400+, but they are very accurate. There are one or two others making plastic ones that aren't as stringent and charge under $50, but it's a little more obvious they are reproductions (slightly wrong font, the letter C and #1 are obvious tells, which is fine because it helps prevent tag fraud). There are resources to help get an idea of what the codes might be based on your installed options, but it won't be perfect without an original tag to copy.
