Ok. That’s where I thought you were going. Abandoned the mechanical regulator in the fuel gauge all together. Sourced a 12VDC to 5VDC solid state regulator and wired that in. Fits nicely to the back of the metal frame. Will post a picture of the configuration

These are the Speedhut Gauges setup for '66/'67 Chargers. They're very nice high quality units that have a lifetime warranty.

I concur. As time marches on, Good rebuildable cores are getting harder to find. I lucked up and bought an NOS fuel gauge a couple years ago for my car. Speedhut did a nice job on their gauges and looks better than the other choices on the market.
 
Agree with Redbeard, IMHO nothing is going to look better than the original gauges. Simple clean styling. Fantastic look when illuminated. Attempts to mimic t he styling just look like they don't belong, no matter how expensive. They just don't fit in with the styling the car.
